Warlock cards: Free to choose?

By BotanyGuy, in Talisman

Why did the designers make it so that players could freely choose the Warlock cards in the expansion? I just don't get it. In a game that revels in randomness this is a surprising rule. It seems to me the player will chose what is most convenient for them at the time...Oh, I have two gold I'm not using, or I'll discard that useless wand since my craft isn't high enough to hold a spell. This should be a random draw from the deck!

we're going to make it random, too.

I hope everybody will make it random. Choosing freely the quest is against the overall randomness of Talisman and unappropriate. You visit a Warlock to receive a quest, not to choose the easiest quest he has left for you; what about the hero stuff?

Again, I think it's another way that FFG are trying to speed up the game. It rewards people who get into the Middle Region first, by allowing them to get a Talisman easily.

I am going to make this a random draw also.

Absolutely random. The Warlock has his own agenda and needs unknown to the characters. And in this case even Fate can't be used.

We've always made it random.

Agree. We play random draw too.

Talismans are not complicated to get. It almost seems to rain talismans some days. Warlock cave does not need to be easier.

I do agree, that the Random factor needs to be put back in. Or the quests should have actually been harder.

Here is a point to bring up though...When you had to roll a dice, for the quest, you were able to use a "fate" to re roll it. WIth the deck of quests you technically cant do that then, becasue it is not dice rolling.

So you have two options to add to your Random Draw of the quest cards.

A)Allow Players to use a fate point to draw a different quest, should they not like their initial draw.

B) Draw two random quests cards, and choose from those. (this sort of adds the flavor that you can choose your quest, while keeping some of the randomness)

I choose also for random.

If you are free to choose a card from the Warlock, then you take the quest that's the most covenient .

The Warlock gives you a quest and you must accept it.

Anyway, if you are lucky, you draw a talisman from the deck.

Or just take one of the many littering the board. In a recent game nobody could get a Mule or Horse & Cart, but everyone was drawing/getting Talismans. I think Idol had 2-3 dropped on it, 2 others were cluttering a couple of more spaces. It was like they were going out of fashion, people were chucking them away.

Aren't there only 4 talismans ? I thought you were supposed to replace a "drawn" one with proper Talisman card.

This is something that has been plaguing me as well, lately, specifically with swords. If you pull a sword from the adventure deck, are you supposed to replace it with one from the purchase deck? I know that when the purchase cards are used up, you can no longer buy any more of them, but it seems like it would go twice as quickly if you are using the purchase ones for something drawn off of adventure.

Right now, my game just allows for both.

As for the Original question, I put all 12 of the warlock quests on the space, and have the player choose one randomly. The original quest was given by a random determination of 2 dice. I see no point in making it NOT random, because then everyone will always choose the easiest quest. "Hmm, give up a spell, or 5 points of strength?"

I like this idea. I've just been playing random draw with the quest cards, but I think I'll give this a try for a few games and see how it works out.

Didn't they also change it so you can't enter the Inner Region if you have an unfinished Warlock quest? I don't know what the new quests are, but I don't like the idea of someone getting stuck with a quest they'll have a hard time finishing and being unable to finish the game while they have it...

The Warlock will prevent anyone who want to open the portal of power if he has not finish the quest.

So i give you a advice: Don't go to the Warlock, if you have already a Talisman ! gran_risa.gif

Otherwise you are stuck with your quest, if it is difficult to complete gui%C3%B1o.gif

Oh I totally didnt see the rule on you can't make it to the inner region with an open quest! That's good to know. We also have been playing with randomly picking a card from the deck as opposed to freely picking. The first time with the Reaper expansion we played that way and it made it to easy, and not as fun.

As far a the picking items from the deck, we've always counted those as traditional items and not taken from the purchase or talisman deck, as I always just assumed the card would of said Take a Sword from the shop or something, if it wasnt ment to be used just like the swords, talisman, shield, etc from the traditional venue.
