Question about the new Magister Illyrio

By potatoechip99, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

So the new Magister Illyrio reads: Response: After a character enters play during the challenges phase choose a non-unique character. Until the end of the phase that character gets -1 STR and is killed if its STR is 0.

I know that wordings can sometimes be tricky with some effects, so my question is whether or not this effect will work when multiple characters enter play durring challenges since this card says specifically "After a character". For example if I used Rhaeny's Hill to bring in all characters from an opponents dead pile does his effect still work? Also, does that mean I get to choose a character to get -1 for each of the multiple characters I bring in? Or does the effect only trigger once since all of them are being brought in simutaneously? The mechanics here are a big deciding factor on whether to build a deck around this effect or not.

Thanks!

Each character that enters play creates a separate "-1" Response opportunity, even if those characters are brought into play by the same effect. (It's the same as being able to respond to each individual character that dies for Valar or being able to respond to each individual card discarded for something like Raiding Fleet.) Illyrio can Respond once for each character that comes into play, not once for each effect that brings a character into play.

Thanks for the quick reply. This was the intuitive answer but I wanted to be sure I was playing the card correctly.

That also means you can spread the hate by choosing different targets.
