Cincinnati Regional Report- 1st place

By player1181705, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

First off I can not express how awesome YottaQuest and the meta there was the entire day. I felt like a part of the group as soon as I stepped into the shop.

Secondly, I would like to think Kahl Usion and by extension Widowmaker93 for help with my deck, without him I definitely would not have gotten as far as I did in the tourney.

Lastly, I would like to think my meta members from the Kentucky Khalasar for helping me make final adjustments and for the ride to and from the tourney

.

The day itself was a total blur when it came to playing. I did manage to copy down the decks I faced but I did not remember to get the names of my opponents. Anyways here is my match-ups.

Match 1:

Targaryen Maesters

Result: loss (0-1)

I forgot the most important rule about how to beat a maester deck.. Kill the maesters before they get chains off the agenda. After a turn 1 misplay I knew that I was done for and in quick succession I was proven correct. The only highlight of this match that I can remember is that I Ruled by Decree and he had to discard 10 cards.

Match 2:

Lannister Power Behind the Throne/ shadows

Result:: win (1-1)

The shadows portion of the deck made this game a slow grind but I was able to burn out challenges and kill the characters when needed. When a valar was not flipped on turn 7 I emptied my hand a pushed for the win.

Match 3:

Stark Winter/ Shadows with the Kings of Winter agenda

Result: win (2-1)

Again the shadows portion of the deck slowed me down but even the white raven couldn't stop Ambush. I won on turn 7.

Match 4:

Baratheon Nights Watch with Stewards agenda

Result: win (3-1)

I never let him get started with anything. Art of Seduction was played on my Threat from the North turn and I wiped his board twice using forever burnings and influence during domination. The game ended on a combination of Hatchlings Feast/ Ambush from the Plains/ The Thundering Calvary Challenges phase to push through the last 5 power.

Match 5:

Martell icon control (or as he put it "a mix of everything")

Result (4-1)

This match was a pain just because he managed to get his one Ghaston Grey out and kept bouncing everything I wanted to burn. I managed to get more characters out than he could strip/bounce an let Meraxas take care of rest.

At this point in the day I was placed 3rd overall and was paired against 6th overall.

Match 6: Top 8

Lannister Power Behind the Throne

Result: win (5-1)

I went with the old, If he has no strength on the board he can't win challenges, theory and it worked pretty well. PBTT earned me 2 cards and 3 power if I remember right and I was ready for my top 4 match-up.

Match 7: top 4

Targaryen Maesters (REMATCH)

Result: win (6-1)

This time I did not forget the rule of playing against maesters and made sure that one didn't stay on the board during the challenges phase. This was my longest match of the night, going 14 plots. I had 10 cards left in my deck and only 3 characters left. Meraxas was the champion here as we were both able to burn out each other on Threat from the North turns. 3 Forever Burnings and many cards with influence production on them made for some big burns. In the end he had well over 20 power but he could not get the chains off his agenda.

Match 8: finals

Stark Wildlings/ 3 agenda

Result: win (7-1)

I had heard about this deck all day so all day i was saying to myself, "so it's a wildling deck, what do I need to do?" For me, my plan was to:

  • Burn the King Beyond the Wall and Val
  • Watch out for the Horde
  • Find Meraxas
  • Remember that he needs 21power to win (see part A)

I took this one slow, I started with a hand of 3 influence producers, Meraxas, Dragon Knight, 1 forever burning, and a burn attachment (Flame Kissed or Dragon Skull i cant remember which) I drew into Pyat Pree and a Bay of Ice. I opened with a search and detain and bounced Jon Snow back to his hand. I dumped my hand onto the board leaving me with 3 cards in hand and waited until next turn. I ruled by decreed him down to 4 getting rid of 1 of his hordes. A turn later Pyat was able to take out another with an intrigue challenge and a replacement claim. 2 hordes down he didn't see the third. As soon as Val and Mance hit the board I played Threat from the North and took them out using the Forever Burning in Dominance to do repeated burn. After he got out his 3rd frozen outpost I quit attacking, relying on Meraxas to do the dirty work. I managed to ride Meraxas for at least 10 of my power. The game ended on an unopposed intrigue challange and pass to dominance for the win. It lasted around 11 plots.

now for the thing you have all been waiting for me to share.

Closing thoughts:

This deck took some time to feel comfortable in my hands. There was a point where I felt that the character base was too expensive and that I was going to be left exposed way too often, then I started playing with the deck. It can be fast against certain decks, especially against certain draws. Hitting The Dragonpit/ Lyanna combo is harsh against low strength characters. At one point I could burn down a 6 strength character just for making a challenge against me. Hatchling /Ambush from the plains/ thundering Calvary took out so many people who were waiting to defend against a challenge. Daario ended up a dead card a lot of the time but that may have just been a meta thing. All in all it was a great day and I met a lot of great people/ Once again thank you YottaQuest and your meta for putting on a great event.

I'm wondering, how exactly did I help you with the wins? Other than you playing a deck that is nearly identical to the deck that I played against our friend Tony last week? Did he send you my decklist? LOL

Tony (Khal Usion) told me about your deck and made sure that I gave you credit for it.

How often did you get Dragonpit working with just 6 shadows cards to fuel it?

I only got to play dragonpit once but I made sure that I had a shadows card to go with it as well. My opponent stayed at minus one until he managed to get two shadows of his own in play using a city plot.

Yeah, Dragonpit is not really an optimal card in KotHH without lots of shadow cards to go with it. In this list I actually run Aegon's Hill or Rhaenys Hill. Aegon's Hill is just murder vs Ghaston Grey and Rhaenys Hill is amazing vs a lot of decks. Namely anything with characters.

Glad you had fun playing(and winning) with my deck. I guess I need to have a chat with our buddy, Khal, about keeping my stuff under wraps. :)

I sent him flowers for helping me to know how to destroy you later in June!

You are more than welcome to come and give it a try, mikey. :D

To be fair, I don't see any secret tech in that deck. Really nothing in there that separates it from any other Targ Burn. Still, guy shouldn't be giving away your decklist.

We worked on the deck together and he said that it was similar to what he had seen widowmaker93 run. It wasn't like he wrote down the decklist and gave it to me. Like you said, it is not like there was any secret tech in there.

One of the Hills may have been better but I felt like the Dragonspit allowed for a one sided strength reducer that could help get that last little bit of burn needed for some challenges. Plus it was good when I would have a shadows card sitting there waiting for a juicy target. Looking back on it changing out that location would probably be something I would look at if I decide to run this deck again.

Note the smiley face…means it was said jokingly. I never wrote down my decklist for him. However, I did play it 3 times last week against our friend Khal and by looking at the deck it is obvious that it is the one that I ran. Not 100% card for card exact list, but my deck none the less. There might be 2 cards different.

No, there is no secret tech in there. Who gives away their secret tech? That's why it's called secret. ;)

First off, grats to ZP on the win.

No there really isn't anything in the deck to seperate it from most other targ burn. However, when I was on the recieving end of that deck, a few of the more disgusting combos really stuck with me, for example First Snow, and RBD countering the weakness of KoTHH. To be honest Widowmaker, I was getting ZP to help me fill in the missing gaps so I would have a targ burn to playtest against. So its your fault for living up to your screen name whenever you roll me with decks like that.

But, if I am selling secrets, ZP, you know where to send the playmat =)

How does he know where I live?

In all seriousness, that deck is just very consistent. Running 3x Meraxes nearly guarantees that you will see it early and extra copies can be ditched to Ser Barristan once he arrives. Giving you dominance almost every round and that card draw is so important for KotHH decks to have. Bay of Ice is a natural include when running KR Fiefdoms and Ambush from the Plains. It just makes the whole deck gel very nicely. To be honest, BOI is not something that I have seen many other KotHH decks run. Most I have seen are running Pyromancer's Cache. I just found that it was too expensive for the deck a lot of the time and was just stuck in my hand, even with the extra ambush characters mitigating the need for lots of gold.

Like I said, there aren't any secrets or special tech in that deck. It's just super consistent and a blast to play. All my secrets are being saved for our regional. ;)

Congratulations to ZP on a hard fought win in the championship, even if I was rooting for his opponent.

Cincy regional was awesome and the gaming store had a really great setup.

-Tony-

I was ZP's Shadows opponent in Game 2. And I'd just like to say he was a terrific guy to play against. At one point, we had a tricky little rules question that neither of us was sure how to handle and he insisted we get it right even though it was to his detriment. I've been raving about him to my friends ever since I got home.

Congrats on the win. You deserved it.
