Playing Actions During The Story Phase

By Rathpex, in CoC Rules Discussion

Hi all,

I have recently started playing with my Cthulhu Cards once again. I am trying to figure out if I have the timing worked out correctly for the Story Phase.

The specific question that I have is: Can you play action cards during an Icon struggle?

I assume that the answer is No.

For example if I had a card which said 'Action: Target character loses all printed Icons' Do I have to play that after characters are committed to stories but before they start the Icon struggle?

Thanks

The answer is no, you can't play actions once the icon struggles begin. Only disrupts and forced responses can resolve during the icon struggles. Responses, while having their trigger requirements met during the icon struggles, must wait until the struggles end before being executed (if able).

Your example is correct. You would have to play your card (I believe in this case it's Binding) after characters are committed but before the icon struggles start. Check page 13 of the rulebook for a detailed timing sequence as that should answer most of your questions.

Thanks for the quick response, yes it was after reading page 13 that I just wanted to make sure that we were playing correctly.

I am use to being able to play effects generally whenever I want, lol.

Cheers!
