How long do your games usually last?

By felkor, in Dust Warfare

Just wondering how long it usually takes for your games of Dust Warfare to go.

My wife and I played a game - our armies were around 160 points a piece and it took about 1:45 to play. Now, we were talking through our decisions because we're still learning the game and the strategies, but it sounds like that would be an abnormally long game for that many points.

So I'm curious - how long are your games typically taking (and how big are your armies?)

I have been playing at 150 lately just as introductory games for a lot of my friends and they don't even take an hour.

Locally we've been playing 300 for the most part and the games are coming in a bit under 2 hours.

My oldest son and I played a 175 point game while watching TV and it was about an hour and a half because we kept stopping to watch kung fu fights. gran_risa.gif

My games have lasted a little under 2 hours for 300 points.

Our games are lasting wayyyyyy longer…300s are around 4 hours, 150s around 2.5. Getting faster every time though…also getting less cautious and more aggressive, which is the big thing. We also probably spend more time than necessary planning what our stuff is going to do, but thats part of the fun…

edit:

we also like to play on large boards with lots and lots of LOS obstructing terrain, so thats partly to blame…

Glad to hear I'm not the only one whose games are going longer. Right now as we're still learning the game, we tend to talk through our decisions so we all understand some of the tactics going on (my wife doesn't find it fun if I stomp all over her and not explain to her some of the tactics, especially since she's not constantly reading the forums like I am.) So that adds a lot of extra time.

My *hope* is that once we both feel comfortable with the game, a 150 point game can be played in about an hour.

I'm also wondering if we're not playing aggressive enough, although so far we find when someone tries to be aggressive, that's when the opposing side reacts and crushes the aggressive side (or at least the units trying to be aggressive.)

I'm wondering about the cover situation too - thinking about trying to make a more urban board where LOS is blocked more, but it's harder to always have your units in cover.

depends on the level of chat/beer.

200ap games are around 45 minutes to an hour, but this is dependent on the list compisition.

I just knocked out 2 roughly 150 pt games in about an hour. This game plays very fast once you have the rules to some basic level and you don't stop to look up every little thing.

The lesson I've learned with this game is not come to the table expecting you A game results. Just make a good plan, build a list to fit and adapt well, and then be prepared to lose because the dice hates us in this game. aplauso.gif

Yes come to the table with that expectation and just smile because it is fun to just move the guys around and keep adapting. You will need lots of planning during setup but otherwise the game play is fast and many of the preconceptions I had about certain units are wildly unfounded. Now UGLs are still rediculas but other than that, which we hope will be errata'd, the game is solid and plays super quick.

Felkor:

Our terrain layouts have tended to have more stuff that just blocks LoS than actual cover pieces…pseudo urban style. I actually like playing with these layouts better, as the exact position of minis seems a lot more important. With our terrain It also makes a great dynamic of making you choose between cover bonus or blocked LOS. It also makes the 6" unit coherency a lot more interesting if you have a bunch of smaller obstructions on the board that make you "split" squads up a little bit.

The downside of adding a lot of that type of stuff is it gets super fiddly during each turn while you bring out the laser pointer to check the exact positions minis need to be in…probably why our games take so long.

Basically, we're making it a little more complicated than it needs to be just because its a fun challenge.

To start with, games took forever just because we tended to keep stuff safe and trade pot shots rather than confront each other…but that was just a matter of figuring out what certain units' roles should be.

As for game time, I just played a 220 point game in 1:30. And that includes table set-up. It was a draw.

(Darn, zombies are hard to get rid of!)
