Close Combat Casualties and Range

By Grim6, in Dust Warfare

Just wanted to check a situation that arose last night in a little demo game:

Rhino + Hammers jump into Close Combat with a Recon Grenadier squad. Recon squad is already suppressed. Technically, the Hammers should be back a little further due to the 1" rule for movement, but regardless, only 2 of the Recon Squad is in range. All of the Hammers + Rhino are in range, and get 10 hits (one die is off picture). Now, do only the two in range get pulped, or do the casualties get taken from the whole squad?

Reading the rules, it looks like only minis with LOS blocked can be excluded from being a casualty, but that range is not a consideration. So the whole squad gets wiped, even if they made the 2 armor saves. Working on the premise that these are actual moving people on a battlefield, and not statues, I can accept some abstraction for that.

Any thoughts? Is that right?

yes grim, right on the money mate.

if a miniature is in range with its weapon and has line of sight, it can contribute to the attack.

so long as a miniature isnt out of line of sight compleately, it can be wounded during an attack.

so yes, thats correct.

Yeah the with RAW it strictly states that the only time wound allocation is not for the entire squad is when a model is out of true LOS, no where does it exempt models from damage just because they are out of range. Similarly if you are shooting at a squad and all your guns have range to only one model, but the other models are not hidden from LOS and you cause more then one wound they have the option to pull from anywhere in the squad.

So basically what were saying is that even though only two of the axis dudes were in range, since the LOS was not blocked to the other three, we can distribute damage to everyone not just the two dudes who were in range?

This must work for shooting also then huh? If I shoot with a 16" ranged weapon and I can only target two guys(who were within 16") and I hit 5 times, I can wipe out the entire squad not just the two guys who were within 16"?

Correct. A miniature only has to be in range of one other miniature to participate in combat and roll dice, and those dice affect every miniature in LOS.
