The grapnel & harness

By Tisis, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Quick question. players want to use the grapnel like Batman and zip around places. It has an auto ascender which I would assume would allow this but I have no idea what a good movement rate while grapneling would be or how to rule it.

In the past we've just said sure whatever but now its kind of become a common practice with one of the players who wants to get a 'best' craftsmanship grapnel which can be placed in his cybernetic arm that would allow him to cling to nearly any surface and shoot out 30 meters.

Any one else had this come up?

Thanks

It says it has a "powered winch"

Not sure if i would call anything that Batman uses a powered winch, sounds too slow

If it was best quality however, you could rule it that on an easy (+30) climb test he can move at normal speed up the face of the building but if he moves faster than a full move i.e running then on a roll of 95-100 on the climb test he falls visciously to the ground as the grapnel shakes loose from its mooring due to the speed of his ascent.

That any good ? Gives some of the super human actions that it seems the player is after whilst limiting him to essentially two stories in 6 seconds (which is still incredible) or risk a 1/20 chance of falling from 18+ metres up

Thats an awesome idea! I can never think of a simple answer when were playing so I just wing it everytime. Thanks for the advice!

By core the clip harness is for descending only.

One of my player have the same "fetish" of using the grapnel to jump over pits or buildings, things like that. Whenever he's trying to do dangerous things using the grapnel I make him roll a Climb check to see if he fall or not, pretty much like 624 said, but I also make the player roll a Ballistic Skill check when it would be difficult to actually attach the grapnel somewhere. But just the Climb check makes the use of the grapnel pretty dangerous depending how far you are from the ground. demonio.gif But when he fails the Climb check, if he used the harness, he fall for a number of meters equal to the meters of rope used by the grapnel. Depending from the situation, it's a big drawback. One time my player used the grapnel in combat to go from one bridge to another, he failed the climb test, but the harness saved him… thing is, he was suspended to a rope 300m away from the ground, had 15m of rope to climb to reach the bridge and an enemy was trying to cut the rope to make him fall to his death. He was fortunately saved by something called "suppressing fire" babeo.gif . Let's say he's happy that his character is still alive XD.
