Soooo….Runewars!

By El Mariachi, in Runewars

Hi guys,

So it's that time again and I'm getting the urge to buy another FFG game. I've got a number of potential candidates, Runewars being one of them. So I wanted to ask you guys, should I get it? Now I know that asking on the Runewars board will get me a biased answer but bare with me :) I'm trying to avoid getting multiple games that cover the same 'itch' so to speak. This makes Runewars a slightly odd choice for me as I have games which I consider similar, but I'm wondering if Runewars is different enough.

Player number wise, 3-4 players is not a problem at all. It's the average number of players I can get for a game at anyone time although I can get more if necessary. The closest games I have to this are probably Warrior Knights and Twilight Imperium. The thing that attracts me to Runewars (other than it looks impressive laid out) is that it seems to be more of a straight up wargame without any of the politics and negotiating (which we already have with warrior knights and Ti3).

What do you guys reckon?

Cheers,

El

Runewars is definitely a lot more war-centric than TI3, though Runewars does have a lot of resource management in order to do well.

I've never played Warrior Knights, but I love TI3. Runewars, for me, is right up there with TI3 in terms of my all-time favorites. Runewars scales very well from 2-4, and with all the different map possibilities, every game still feels fresh.

I would definitely recommend it!

I'd agree with the above. Runewars is a great game, great for between 2-4 players, and varies quite a bit depending on which race you play as and because every game map is different.

Definitely a lot more 'war' lead, and also has an element of a mini rpg with the hero units, which with the expansion can also become leaders in battles. They get card upgrades such as armour or weapons, can train, have special abilities too, a little bit like characters in Talisman.

Overall, a great, varied and fun game!

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

I'm definitely intrigued a bit by Runewars, and hearing that it scales well is good to hear. What's it like as a 2-player game? I don't really have much in the way of 2-player games at the moment (well, ones that play well as a 2 player).

The other main contender for my next game is Arkham Horror simply because it sounds very different to anything else I own at the moment which is probably why I'll get it next, but if I do, Runewars will be soon after if I continue to hear good things!

Cheers,

El

At my table RW has replaced WK. I miss the diplomacy, but you get more for it:

- scallability. Even with 2 players it's fun to play. Snowball effect is harder to get than in most area control games. IMO WK works well with 4+ players.

- more fun with battles. WK is missing different unit types, even with expansion.

- different ways to win. War is not the only option.

- more new players come back for RW than for WK.

We will still play WK sometimes, but in my opinion RW is a better game with enough similarities to replace it completely. Test it.

That's a really good comparison thanks. Warrior Knights was my gateway game so it would be a shame to replace it but having said that, you sell Rune Wars quite well!
