House Rules and Expansion rules

By rdw5150, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello!

I hope all is well!

As new player I was wondering what house rules people play with the most. As a long time "paper and counter" wargamer, I tend to shy away from house rules, but know there are those who love to "mess with the system". As a newcomer to AH, I was just wondering what house rules people tend to use as there seems to be a ton of them noted on BGG.

Also, when people add an expansion, do you tend to add all the rules for that expansion, or just pick and choose? I have been thinking of adding Dunwich, but frankly I am not ready for Gate Bursts. Heck I cannot even get the gate that open now closed and sealed, let alone worrying about a sealed gate coming back to haunt me. gran_risa.gif But I would like to venture to Dunwich and use the new Injury and Madness rules (for example).

Thanks!

Peace

Roger

In my opinion, this game does not need any house rules and I dont like using house rules myself.

The designer,Richard Launius, has some house rules posted on Fantasy Flights support section for Arkham Horror but I have never tried these because I do not feel the game needs it.

I do love the madness and injury cards that they added in the Dunwich expansion.I like it because it is more severe when you are reduced to 0 stamina or 0 sanity now.The gate burst mythos cards are a brutal mechanic that I like but it does really stink when you are hit by one. They seem to get us once a game but we do play with all the expansions.

Each expansion has made the game harder so that is something to keep in mind.

There was a recent thread regarding House Rules:

For the most part, when I get an expansion, I don't bother with any kind of style of play that separates out that expansion in some way, aka "Visiting Exhibit". It burns through the new cards too fast, and decreases my chances of a surprise over the next few months. So I just mix it in with the old cards, but JUST the base set, for a few games to get the feel of the "new rules". Then I start reintroducing my long-standing House Rules and test THEM against the new system. (I wager this is how a lot of us lost MANY of our House Rules after testing Dunwich in this way.) Eventually, an equilbrium is reached and standardized...until the next expansion.

Thanks for the link and the thoughts! I do agree about the cards. When I play I do not even look at text on the other locations from the encounter or other worlds cards. I do not want to ruin the surprise.

You can easily ignore the gate bursts and treat them and normal gates opening. I like the bursts cause they add a lot of tension in the mythos phase and they don't happen as often as I thought they would.

Once I get "better" at the game, I think they would be OK, but right now, I am only on game 3 and getting my butt kicked llorando.gif gran_risa.gif
