Need help for a new character

By Deesje, in Deathwatch

Please help me,

My friends changed our RT campaign to a DW campaign. There is one problem, I don't like playing a space marine because I am a woman and I’m not really into cross gender playing. So I’m building a mortal character to run along the space marines. The GM asked me to something different than usual (primaris psyker with pyromancy and biomancy.)

does anyone have ideas?

sister of battle?

inquisitor?

How should I build those, I've never done annything like that? and how do I make them able to take on the space marine's enemies?

There is not a way to be a peer to Astartes in combat except for psyker (Primaris or a psychic Inquisitor/Interrogator) or Vindicare Assassin cheese so don't bother building from that perspective. Really the DH and DW psy systems are terribly incompatable to boot.

Skilled Throne Agents can do things Astartes cannot: blend in, have a real conversation with people, stealth about. Ascended DH characters will have tons more skills and talents (and skill bonuses and characteristic advances) than any Astartes. I might suggest Scum into Desperado or Cleric/Witch Hunter into Hierophant and eventually Interrogator. If you lack a Techmarine perhaps Tech-Priest into Magos. Social skills, lots of little useful things like Security, and some combat prowess. You just can't expect to deal or take damage like an Astartes, so look at things that will complement their combat dominion with skills they utterly lack or only get late into the game.

I would take a second look at the space marine option. Don't think of it as cross gender, think of it as playing an effectively genderless super being. For Astartes, the needs of the flesh are two things, fuel (food) and exercise. Anything other than these two things are unknown or half remembered ideas. Any super masculine attitude or actions, in my view, are purely acts on the part of the individual marine, attempted grasps to find a trace of their former humanity. A way for some to cope with the fact they are so removed from mortals that they might question if they ever were human at all.

Otherwise what others have suggested are perfectly good options. Just be aware that Astartes are going to always outclass you physically, while any mortal character will outclass them with skills.

I really don't mean to offend anybody, but I don't see what the problem is in cross-gender roleplaying. You can play a 1000-year-old wood elf, but not a member of the opposite sex?

Not seeing an appeal in playing a genetically engineered killer robot, OK, that I can see gui%C3%B1o.gif

Like the other people said, I don't think other characters archetypes fit well with DW (except maybe for a one-off thing). For the reasons they mentioned; incompatibility in power levels and roles.

Off the head mortal character concepts:

*Mortal pilot of Astartes grade military equipment (from Razorback to Stormraven). Not much good in the field on the ground, but can give supporting fire or transport the astartes from one place to another. Ask what people think of your combat effectiveness when you're rocking a twin-linked lascannon.

*Enforcer. An arbite that's been seconded to the service of the Chambers Militant. While you don't have the stats to back up the power of the astartes, all your requisition goes into purchasing a Horde of arbites to go into battle with - you're just the commander of fifty odd Arbites. (Dark Heresy: Arbitartor/Rogue Trader: Rogue Trader,Arch-Militant)

*Chapter Serf Artificer. If the group doesn't have a techmarine, having a chapter serf what is knowledgeable on the way Astartes equipment works may be a blessing. You might not be combat effective, but you've got all teh skills teh Astartes need (Dark Heresy: Adept, Tech-priest/Rogue Trader: Seneschal,Explorator)

*Sister of Battle, Temple Assassin, Primaris Psyker - All of these could hold their own alongside a kill-team if you played them at ascendant level.

*Astartes voidship commander. The captain of the destroer that ferries the Killteam from mission to mission. Not only can you accompany them, should you desire, but the ability to call in orbital strikes is amazing fun (Rogue Trader: Rogue Trader)

That's all I can think of without really havign a look. Hope one of those works!

Kshatriya: You are very right. I've been toying around with the Idea of an inquisitor. It seems fun and I can still be a psyker (some familiarity) but in a completly different way.

Professor_Kylan: The Pilot sounds NICE to, I'm definetly going to explore that option. Piloting skills are found in the voidmaster path right?

If you have a flexible, maybe extra-RPG-oriented GM, I would have to say "grab up the Inquisitor!" If you can't, or don't want to play a Space Marine, Inquisitors are probably the second best option in this game, IMO. Space Marines are stereotypically lacking in the Skills department, whether your game proves that true or not, and an Inquisitor can cover that excellently. They can also interact with various aspects of the Crusade forces; one can never overlook the ability of unilateral authority.

If the Kill Team is lacking in a dedicated commander, an Inquisitor can fill that niche well; while Space Marines are among the few groups who an Inquisitor cannot just say "no, I think you will", they would still certainly accept orders from an Inquisitor who proved intelligent, especially if their SM superior ordered them to. Even if this was more a consultant suggesting direction, Space Marines aren't usually stupid, and have an idea how capable an Inquisitor had to be to get herself the Rosette.

They have excellent in-game access to the best gear, to put them in a position where they aren't slowing the Kill-Team down too bad, in combat. They have the best flexibility, being able to specialize in Xenos, Chaos, or Daemons, letting them be effective against any Reach-based foes, and they can have psychic powers, if you want, or not, and aren't as cheesy-broken, in that way, as many people find the Primaris. They also seem to be the overall best character, with Vindicares being rather non-personality, and hard to explain, while Primaris are risky, and usually too powerful.

So yeah, I'd say build the great Inquisitor, get some great gear, and build toward some of the Kill-Team's lack points. They can have great info on the threat of the day, deal with positive NPCs, on several levels, and could just be fun. Good guns, advanced PA pr Termie suit, and a few other things could make her awesome to play.

Saw this picture and thought of your question. I'd say go Inquisitor/psyker.

Voidmaster, yeah.

(also, don't listen to these guys! An inquisitor might get good gear, but a Deathwatch chapter serf pilot gets Thunderhawk-mounted titan weapons)
