The hive mind and chaos

By TheHeavenlyLily, in Black Crusade

Good morning!

The Hive Mind has been known to change and adapt when confronted with new foes and situations. So lets say that a tendril of a hive fleet that was thought destroyed has started to feast on worlds that either Renegade or out right Chaos Worshipers. So its vanguard organisms like the Lictor are sent forward. Many of the chaos worshipers have seen and done things most have not making them a bit more jaded to the psychological warfare used by some Hive Fleets.

How would you change the Hive Mind as it adapts to dealing with such things? They would of course outright avoid Daemon-Worlds since there would be little if at all actual biological material to be found. But many of worlds along the outer part of the screaming vortex would be perfect targets. I am also not saying that this tendril of a hive fleet falls to chaos, not at all. But weapons and tactics used to fight a foe that has seen what some chaos worshipers have seen would cause the Lictors to act differently than they would on say an agri-world.

Thanks for the help :)

I don't think it will be very much different to be honest than normal. The Tyranids will adapt to the situation and get new tricks to face what the followers of Chaos can muster. I mean the followers of Chaos arn't really much more strange than some of the more unusual xenos races with wierd tech are and since the Tyranids can't be corrupted I figure it will kind of be business as usual.

Well I mean if your on a world were daemons lurk, sorcery is common as are the gifts of the Dark Mechanicum how is a vanguard organism like the Lictor going to sow proper fear when it would just be considered another daemon? So the populace wouldn't respond like an Imperial World would. Just wanting to clarify for myself really since the vessel they are going to be boarding as been adrift for a while was once in the possession of Chaos and the lower decks may have some little surprises for the PCs.

They may be resistant to the fear part of the lictor, but the actual tactics of picking people off and eating their brains for knowledge will be just as effective as ever, possibly easier because of the lack of reaction. Some things tyranids do would definitely be easier on these planets. How easy would it be for genestealers to implant and control even bigger cults to their broodlords? They wouldn't even need to keep very quiet about it compared to imperial held planets.

Heck, they could probably begin transforming the landscape and people might not notice till it starts killing too many people.

Hmm this is true as well. I am torn between what I want to put on the ship either Tyranids or Tau that are stuck on the ship that has drifted for a long time. Since it abandoned the battle with the Warmaster (who has sent many after it) has only happened about a century ago time spent in the Warp can be distorted. So I was going to have it bounce around the Galaxy before being drug into the Screaming Vortex. After so long spent away from the Hive and hunting the crew how would they change.

By that same token I was considering that the vessel was taken to the Eastern Fringe and engaged the Tau who had several Manta's onboard with boarding parties before the vessel was drug back into the Warp with the trapped Tau still on it. Since the Tau are not psychic it does not mean they can't mutate or change. I want to give the PCs a challenge with potential different factions to side with or fight.

Regarding the Tau that's something up to each GM I would suppose. In my game the Tau can certainly get both corrupted and mutated when exposed to Chaos, its just that they don't have any psykers and only have a very, very weak presence that makes daemons overlook them for the more powerful presence and numbers of humanity. But each to their own.
