"Gate and Monster appear" in a 5+ player game

By Zobrion, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Just need a "reality check". The new(er) rules say that when a gate and monster appear in a game with 5 or more players, then 2 monsters should be drawn from the cup instead of just one.

Is that applicable only in the Mythos Phase or does that also apply whenever a "gate and monster appear" during any Arkham encounter?

Thanks!

Hi there!

Encountering "a gate and a monster appear" in 5+ investigator games forces you to spawn two monsters from the gate, as if you were in the Mythos phase.

Right. Two monsters come out of every open gate, rather than the normal one. This is specifically to spice things up for 5+ games, not because of something fundamental to Mythos-phase gates.

Wow seriously?

For some reason I thought that the encounter was a personal experience of the investigator which he had to deal with himself.

Hence the description literally meant what was written on the card: i.e. 1 monster or 1 gate & monster appears.

Does this apply to "monster appear" encounters as well?

Don"t think so. In fact the "A monster and a gate appears" is a kind of repetition, to remind to put a monster with the gate.

In fact, that encounter should say "A gate appears". And then according to the rules, some monster(s) appears from the gate.

I think it's all coming back to me now.

Monster appears - follow the instructions on the card. I.e fight (and get the trophy) or evade (and it disappears).

Gate opens, monster appears - gate opens first, investigator gets sucked through to Other World and is delayed, THEN 2 monsters appear as per the ruling for 5+ investigator games.

I just had a thought: How does this affect the black goat of the woods? 2normal and 1 hex monsters, 1normal and 2 hex monsters or 2 normal and 2 hex monsters? I couldn't find it in any of the rule books (could be that I'm not paying enough attention though).

Good question. I always play that the Black Goat herald adds a hex monster to what already exists, and that when something says "monster" it means, by default, "not a hex monster." So in that case, it would be two non-hex, one hex. Of course, this is certainly not official.

For what it's worth, the wiki has it as two hex and one non-hex. No idea what the basis is for that, though.

That was my memory too, without looking at the wiki. IIRC, when Tibs and the others were allowed to speak about the coming FAQ, this was their answer. Should check my notes from that period, though, to be sure

It was.

That's kinda cryptic ::laughter::

Do you mean "it had been, but later it was changed" or "it was, and I didn't remember the right answer" or "even if it was, I couldn't care the less because I like more my interpretation?"

Hmm I think i'll go with Tibs current view (wherever it comes from cool.gif happy.gif ).
Feels better with BGotW just adding 1 hex monster to the gate, 2hex and 2 normal would have made sense too but that would be a bit nasty I think.

With no offence meant, mentioning the Black Goat and a desire to avoid nastiness in the same sentence is something of a contradiction in terms….

Yeah. That's why I'll go with the old one… actually, whenever I play with the Black Goat, I CHOOSE to play 5+ investigators because I want to have the two hex coming out of every dam(n) gate… Otherwise it's not so funny…

None taken.

Ok that was perhaps not the best way to put it. Just wanted to say that there's no point in making it even nastier.
