0 Doom tokens... with Ghroth??

By Tibs, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I pulled a random game with Yibb-Tstll as the Ancient One and Ghroth as the herald. An 11-doom AO with 2 on its track to start. Great.

The first Mythos card off the deck is...guess what? MYSTIC! Everyone loses a stamina.

Well anyway, I sent Jenny to the Bank to get a loan so she could shop for Elder Signs. She started with the Carcosan Page, so she could trade away all the cool stuff she could buy ;)

A few gates opened, and some of the other characters gathered enough clues to seal. Well in the first two rounds of shopping, Jenny bought Eltdown Shards, which removes a doom token from the track when read. A Mythos card caused everyone to re-fight a random monster trophy, awarding an Exhibit Item on success, and Dexter Drake nabbed a Parchment of the Elder Sign. That's another doom token down the drain! (Jim Culver got a Book of Anubis, and a bunch of investigators went insane and unconscious, keeping him quite healthy ;-D )

When Dexter got Amnesia (ARGH), I assigned him to monster duty. He had a Sword of Glory, Shrivelling, and Wither, so this was not a problem. Two monsters were put into Dunwich, right in front of the white/black arrow into a vortex. I decided to send him there. One of the monsters was a Mi-Go, which dropped an Elder Sign! Way to work around your Amnesia, Dex!

Mark went to the Witch House, where a silhouetted nude model asked him to paint her. He can't take a hint and blurted out, "I can't paint, lady" and she turned into a Hound of Tindalos and devoured him :'(

He was replaced with Marie Lambeau... who used her Witch Blood on the next Upkeep to strip yet another doom token off of Yibb!

Dexter went through the remaining gate with his Elder Sign. In his first encounter in Lost Carcosa, he encountered Mr. Skin, who offered to join him (take an ally of your choice). Of the 11 allies in the deck, I had a lot of good choices:

Tom Murphy's +2 Fight is always welcome, especially with Dexter's +1 Fight skill, which would make him practically froth at the mouth.
Zebulon Whateley's spell-refresh would be great.
Charles Dexter Ward's +1 to all combat spells would have been sweet.
Professor Rice would have replenished the waning clue supply, and there was no plan to fight Yibb anyway.
John Legrasse's +2 Will would have been welcome, as Dexter's natural Will is crap.
Erich Weiss: +2 Evade, +2 Spell, never be delayed. Quite alluring!

But the ally I went with, for the sake of being able to submit this report... William Bain: +1 Speed, +1 Luck. Remove 1 doom token from the doom track when William Bain joins you.

Ahahahaha! The next mythos card was a gate opening on a seal, and next turn Marie sang Yibb to sleep or whatever and removed a doom token, then Dexter cast Find Gate, returned to Arkham, and sealed the last gate on the board, while removing Yibb's last doom token.

Oh, and the terror level never went up, either. Even if it did, we had a Director's Diary to prevent it once ;)

Score: 20. Terror Level: 0. Doom track: 0. With GHROTH starting Yibb with 2 doom tokens! This would have been a perfect game if Mark had not been devoured, but he gave his life for the cause (replaced with Marie).

Did you roll for Mystic cards?

Just the one time: everyone loses a stamina.

How many Doom Token you remove? 8+

6 tokens were removed.

Two from Eltdown Shards
One from an Elder Sign
One from a Parchment of the Elder Sign
One from Marie Lambeau
One from William Bain

Four gates opened that game, and we won by closing all gates (all of them were sealed too :-D)

Great report, thanks for posting

I enjoyed the report, but one question: How was a Hound of Tindalos able to DEVOUR Mark?

Excellent question. The Hound of Tindalos will devour anyone without prejudice, so long as angles are nearby. They aren't afraid of anything (or anytime for that matter).

No, the real answer is that he had Hysteria and failed the Hound's horror check, drawing another Hysteria (which instead became DEATH).

GREAT STORY!!! cool.gif gran_risa.gif aplauso.gif

Now that's what one calls a "fated" game. Even the Bad Stuff seemed to happen as a method for allowing the Good Stuff to happen later: had Dexter not gotten Amnesia, you would not have assigned him "monster duty", and thus not faced the Mi-Go with an Elder Sign, and had Mark not gotten himself devoured, Marie would never have entered the game.

So either someone was watching out for you after disaster befell you...or, more likely, the banishment of Yibb-Tstll is part of a Grander Design far beyond what our puny brains could divine, and Nyarlathotep was only using misfortune to disguise his assistance so that his plan was still well hidden.

"Maybe now Ghroth will stop heralding the coming of some lower god, and get back to the REAL job of heralding my Master..."

ACTUALLY, I just got my first pet this weekend—a CAT!
But when I was done setting up the game, of course, he lept up on the table and barrel rolled all the clue tokens all over the place. Some guardian lengua.gif

The Mythos can send the most bizarre blessings sometimes.

Last night, or perhaps early this morning, the Dunwich Horror moved and added a doom, allowing Diana Stanley to regain a crucial sanity, Find a Gate out of Ryleh, and close against Yog-Sototh.

"Who's a good little Dunwich Horror! Yes you are!"

Diana Stanley is a fun char to play, but really want Motorcycle, +1 Speed (maybe even twice), Ruby or something to get her going.

Your cat was applying its blessing to the board. There are reasons why cats sit, roll, and walk through areas where you least want them; they are blessing the area to prevent disaster. Bast is still watching over the world, just better then her guardian incarnation would have you believe

No, I think he just wanted attention. Being home alone for 9.5 hours every day can be really boring.

The only thing he blessed the board with is hair.

Have you ever noticed how your eyesight drifts towards a cat that is staring at you from outside your field of vision?
Have you ever noticed how, when cats are around, things may be harder to do, but end up with fewer problems when all is said and done?
Have you ever noticed how you feel calmer when cats are sitting/laying nearby?
Have you ever noticed how you feel healthier when a cat sits/lays next to you?
Ancient Egyptians believed cats brought good luck and good fortune, warded off diseases, plagues, disasters, and evil spirits. Whether you believe in ancient superstitions or not, strange things happen when cats are around.

Just remember this:

Cats were once worshipped as gods. They have not forgotten.

And they remind us every day, treatening us as their servants/slaves...

Agreed, but I think they also remember how we stupidly mass-exterminated them during the Black Death, because they were believed to be (of course) agents of the Devil. So not only have we ignored their godhood, we started a Kitty Holocaust.

I'm pretty sure that's why they're still not talking to us.
