Question regarding the timing of events

By loffenx, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

This question came up in regards to cards like Ride them Down, an event card with:

Challenges: Choose an attacking Dothraki or Knight character. That character gains renown until the end of the challenge.
Response: After you win a Power challenge by 4 or more total STR, return Ride Them Down from your discard pile to your hand.

Now, when exactly does this event reach the deadpile? After the response-window opened after it is played? If so, can you trigger its recursion-ability at the end of the same challenge within which it was played?

As always, thankful for any replies!

I meant discard pile, of course.

It will hit the discard pile at the end of the action it was used in (since it is a Challenge action, the one it has started). So you can indeed use its return to hand ability in the very same challenge you have used it (provided you meet the restrictions), much like endless endurance.

Note that if you have already started to resolve the challenge (ie, counting up STR to determine the winner, settling claim, etc.), it is too late to play the event to give a character Renown. The event will always be in the discard before that "resolve challenge" window opens.

Does this mean that once defenders are declared you cannot play Ride them down? I thought there was a chance for actions at that time?

There are player actions between the time defenders are declared and the time the challenge resolves.

Thanks for the replies!

  1. Player Actions
  2. Attacker initiates challenges (by announcing challenge type, defending player, and kneeling attacking characters)
  3. Player Actions
  4. Defenders declared (attacker announces stealth targets, defender kneels defending characters)
  5. Player Actions
  6. Challenge is resolved (determine winner, settle claim, award unopposed, award Renown)

Then, you start all over again for the next challenge.

So no, declaring defenders is not the start of resolving the challenge. There is still an opportunity to do stuff (like play "Ride them Down") after declaring defenders and starting to resolve the challenge.
