A couple of questions…

By Sealtyk, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

First question is… Viserys from the core set says Response: Save Viserys Targaryen from being killed or discarded from play, then return him to his owner's hand.

Does that mean I can choose him to satisfy a combat challenge then save him and return him to my hand or no?

Second… Sun Stroke says Attached character cannot be saved.
Response: After you lose a challenge by 4 or more total STR, until the end of the phase, attached character gets -4 STR and is killed if its STR is 0.

If I meet the required fields to activate Sun Stroke and it is attached to a character with 2 dupes on it, does that mean the dupes cannot save the character?

Im prob over thinking this, but thanks in advance

1. Yes, you can use Visereys as a claim soak

2. Well, the dupes save it, but it is killed right after. The only way to really save it is to save it and remove the condition (in this case you would have to raise strength)

YES.

Read the cards as literally as possible.

YES, that is what it means. "Cannot be saved." means CANNOT BE SAVED.

This card also has a terminal effect -- even if you COULD discard the duplicates to save the character, he would still die because his STR is still 0, and Sun Stroke is still attached.

Awesome, thanks. I do try to read the cards as literally as possible lol. I have a bad habit of thinking myself in circles tho. Thanks again.

Even thought using the dupes is pointless in this situation, it's worth clarifying that you actually CANNOT save a character unless you are simultaneously removing it from the terminal state. So you can't even use the dupes.

First, one of the attachment's effects is to make the character "cannot be saved." This means, for all practical purposes, "don't even try to save it."

Second, even if the "cannot be saved" effect was not part of the attachment, any "kill at 0" (or other) terminal effect carries its own "cannot be saved" effect. For any terminal effect, you cannot save the character (and thus cannot try to save the character) unless that save would also remove it from the terminal state (which, in this case, mostly means raising its STR above 0).

Or using an ability like Viserys', mentioned above.
