Newbie question - Royal Entourage

By agent_pumpkin, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Ok Royal Entourage states that as a response I can play this card from my hand or from my discard pile when I put a lord or lady into play.

Hhow many times can I do this? Once for each lord/lady or as many as I have available?

Cheers

Now, if instead you are asking how many different copies of Royal Entourage you can use, there you are just talking about normal Response rules. You can use the Response on each card 1 time per thing they are Responding to. And that's "each card" as in "each individual piece of cardboard," not "each card by title" or "each effect that does something similar." In general, you can use each individual Response effect on each individual copy of a card 1 time for a specific trigger. So playing a single Lord/Lady will let you trigger 3 separate copies of Royal Entourage.

Yes I meant the normal repsonse rules then. I'm still feeling confused, but less so now.

Thanks.

Response opportunities (eg, "after you win a challenge," "after a character dies," "after a card comes into play," etc.) are created and stay open and available until all players have played all Responses they want. So, for example, when Player A beats Player B in a challenge, two separate Response opportunities are created simultaneously: "after (A) wins a challenge" and "after (B) loses a challenge." Player A is not limited to just one Response to winning that challenge. Player A can actually use as many Responses to that single opportunity as he likes.

That part is pretty clear, right? If Player A wins a Military challenge, he can trigger the Responses on the Siege at Winterfell Agenda, Robb Stark's character ability, and the No Quarter event, all for winning the same challenge. Player A is not limited to choosing just one of those Responses for winning the one challenge. All of them apply to winning this one challenge and all of them can be used separately in Response.

Well, the game doesn't make a distinction between two cards with different titles and two separate copied of a (non-unique) card with the same title. As far as the game is concerned, "copy #1" and "copy #2" are totally separate cards. So just like being able to use two cards with different names to Respond to winning that one challenge, you can use two different cards - even though they have the same name - to Respond to winning that one challenge.

Royal Entourage is no different. After you play a Lord or Lady, you would clearly be able to play as many different "after you play a Lord or Lady" Responses with different card titles as you wanted and had available to you, right? Well, again, as far as the game is concerned, "copy #1" and "copy #2" of Royal Entourage are totally separate cards - the same as if they had different titles. So you are free to play the Response on each one for the same Response opportunity (unless something on the card specifically says otherwise).

The limitation of Responses is that each individual card can only be triggered one time for each Response opportunity. That stops things like having just one card that says "Response: after you win a challenge, choose and kill a character controlled by the losing opponent" from being used over and over to wipe out all of an opponent's characters after winning just one challenge. But if you had three separate pieces of cardboard with the same Response, you could use each one 1 time each (killing a total of 3 characters) for the same Response opportunity, whether those three pieces of cardboard have the same title or not.
