Why do dwarfs drink so much and why do halflings eat so much? Let's hear some outlandish (and "realistic" theories)!

our dwarf drinks because he has had a pretty hard live. being pursued by witchhunters for a supposed mark of chaos, driven to the north where its always cold, he drinks some kind of schnapps to keep himself warm and to make him forget about his pain (severe injury) and his troubles.
i think he started drinking in stromdorf during "the gathering strom" when he discovered thunderwater ale ![]()
and drunken actions are a ton of fun i must say!
Why do you humans have such a low tolerance for fermented beverages, the truest pleasure life has! (perhaps underneath it all, the very fixed dwarven mentality enjoys the artificially induced relaxing of intoxication).
Why do you humans have such small appetites? Food is the greatest pleasure, why not partake as much as you can?
Bah, humans thinking they're the baseline for everything.
in both cases, the Old Ones designers (oops did I just goof, I get my Cthulhu and Old World references mixed at times) were really experimenting with "different metabolisms, ways to fuel the engine". As noted previously, halfings are really just scale models for what was to be a larger life form and accidentally got the larger appetite.

I dunno. I don't think the designers put any thought into it and just carried the traditional anachronisms of Tolkien dwarfs and hobbits. Of course the "hafling weed" hasn't been addressed and could explain some of the hunger in a debauched Old World.
