GM Toolkit - Rank based casting invocation - What's your take on it?

By Ceodryn, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hi All,

I was reading again the GM's Toolkit, and looking at the optional rules. I am curious if any group has used the "Rank based casting invocation rules". Those rules seem to make magic much more difficult to cast, which can be a good thing (more miscast :) )

If I am understanding right:

  • A Rank 1 PC casting a Rank 1 spell (Spellcraft based only, not opposed), per RAW has 0 challenge dices.
  • A Rank 1 PC casting a Rank 1 spell, per the GM's Toolkit, has 2 challenge dices.

That's a huge jump in the base difficulty. Then, it states that you can either add the Spell action card difficulty modifier on top of that or have that base difficulty replace it. I find the later option not fun, as all spells (not opposed) of a same rank would then have the same difficulty, regardless of the spell effect.

Any thoughts from groups who have used those rules?

in our group wizards and priest can obtain spells/blessings with a rank max 1 higher than their own. that would cost them one more advance and they will have to add a challenge die to the action until they have reached the rank it is designed for. that makes it hard enough as well, and spending 2 advances on one action makes most back off from that idea, since they can (if they survive) just aquire it a little later in the game

Hey Nephtys,

My question was more toward the use of spells of the same rank as the wizard, and not toward purchasing spells of higher ranks.

Basically, using the GM toolkit rules make casting magic of your same rank a lot more difficult. I was just wondering whether any group used those rules, and what they thought about it.

I was surprised when I first saw those rules in the GM toolkit, as I couldn't figure out why FFG would do that… except if magic is destabilizing because too easy and powerful in the current system. I haven't played enough to know whether it's the case, but I recall 1st edition, where my wizard once past the apprenticeship was migthy.

Cheers
