Few Rule Clarifications for a newbie.

By nevinbutcher, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

G'day All

I've now played a couple of times and totally love the game, in fact I'm slightly obsessed with all things agot at the momet, but I digress…..

There's a couple of instances where we have been a bit unsure about some of the rules, I'm hoping someone can shed some light, My apologies if they seem incredibly simple and are mentioned elsewhere.

So here goes….

1. Do you have to kneel a character in order to claim his gold or influence bonus…. i.e. Littlefinger has plus 2 gold - do you need to kneel him during the marshalling phase to take advantage (like you do with the location cards) or is that gold bonus there for the remainder of his time in play?

2. Deadly - I have read the deadly post in this forum but there is still one thing that confuses me…. Is a character considered as participating when he is in play or only when he is actually involved in a challenge?

3. Duplicated - pretty sure I know the answer to this but with duplicate location cards i.e. western fiefdoms which are limited. How I think this works is.

. You buy the card during marshalling phase

If that card comes into your hand again, you can place it on top of its duplicate for free?

When you kneel that card - do you receive the combined gold/influence bonus of the 2 cards, or just 1 because they are limited.

And if just one - whats the point of having 3 same location cards that are limited?

4. Bringing cards into play - mainly with location cards, can you use them as soon as you have put them in play. i.e. I purchase western fiefdoms, can I immediately kneel it to lower the cost of my next card?

That's it for now, would appreciate any advice.

Cheers

Knelling is only done per card text as a cost for activating abilities on a card, or when declaring characters during challenges. Cards that require influence as a cost tell you to kneel a certain amount of influence to pay for a given effect - so yes, cards with influence on them must be knelt to indicate the use of the influence to pay for an effect. The gold icon on a character adds to the gold you get at the beginning of your marshalling phase. Same as a location card with this icon, there is no kneeling involved - you simply add the additional gold to your gold pool when counting our income for marshalling. In fact, you will collect that gold bonus regardless of whether the location or character is standing or knelt at the time that you count income - as long as that card is in play.

Participating means actively involved in a challenge, i.e., a card declared as an attacker of a defender. Simply being in play does not mean it is participating in the challenge.

Sabre's answers are correct for 1 and 2.

3 - You are confusing limited with unique. You can play a duplicate of a unique card for free, at which point it becomes a blank card that can be discarded to save the original card.

A Limited card is one that you can only play one of per round, but there is no limit to the number of them you may have in play (subject to deck restrictions, of course). Each one is in play separately, so you will get the effects of both of them.

4 - Yes. There is no "summoning sickness" in this game.

radiskull beat me to the others [i've taken to answering in parts now since I've been getting my answers superceded alot lately :) ], but I'll respond with some additional detail to your 3rd inquiry:

Ok, you are a bit confused here. Only Unique cards (black flag next to the card title) can have duplicates. For any unique card (char, location or attachment), you pay the cost to play the first one, then you can play a card with the same title as a duplicate on the original card for no additional gold cost. This duplicate can be discarded from play to save the original card from being killed, discarded, returned to hand, etc… basically anything that would cause it to leave play - unless saving is specifically prohibited by a card effect (see Wildfire Assault plot card).

Western Fiefdoms is not a unique card so it is not possible to duplicate it. You can pay to play additional copies of that card from your hand just as you did for the first one, and eash is completely independent from the others you have already played. The Limited keyword means that you are only allowed to play one such card from your hand each round. This means if you have 2 in your hand, you can play one, but you'd have to wait until your next marshalling phase to play the second one.

Many thanks to the both of you. Much appreciated.

Have a great weekend.

Sorry to ninja you, sabre. :) Just think of it as a tag-team. /highfive

Indeed. And no worries. I've actually got quite used to it. :) It always amazed that a post will go unanswered for hours, and then in the 5 minutes it takes for me to type up a response, someone else has beat me to it! {chuckle}

I enjoy responding 'cause it gives me practice in describing the game and in selected proper word choice. ktom (especially) continues to catch errors in those areas and I learn a little more each time. So even if I delete my response 'cause someone else answered it first, I still get something out of it.

I have no pride, so as long as the correct info is provided, I don't care if I get beat to the punch
