How does the timing of choke cards such as cragon or ice fishermen work, in a choke deck► As I read the marshalling timing it appears first player buys something then i can make a choke action, then he buys something else, and i make another choke action so on and so forth. When I was playing my friend, he managed to use all of his gold on the first buy before I could use my choke. Are we playing correctly► Or should I be making all my choke actions, then he begins buying cards. Any help will be appeciated thanks!
Greyjoy Choke Timing
First of all, it depends who the first player is. If you, the choke player, are the first player, you may take ONE action before he takes an action, then back and forth like that.
SO: If you are first player, you may use either Cragorn or Ice Fisherman to steal a gold, then your opponent has a chance to take an action. The wisest action on his part would likely be to try to spend all of his gold. If he doesn''t spend it all (either by playing something that costs less than the amount of gold he has, or doing something else like using a resucer), you could then use your other character to steal another gold. Then he would get another action if he had any gold left to play something.
If you are not the first player, he gets the opportunity to perform an action (potentially including playing a guy to use up all of his gold) before you could use one of your gold thieves.
After a first player is declared and that player has drawn cards and counted his or her income, the first player has the first choice of action. So pretty much his first purchase is not going to be choked by Craghorn or Ice Fisherman. You have the chance to do one choke after that purchase, and then him and so on. So it is more beneficial to be the first player and choke, especially for Greyjoy''s due to Scouting Vessels and such.
Ok thank you.
This makes choke decks seem much weaker than I first thought.
White Raven GJ choke when setup properly is pretty devastating. However just as long as it takes you to setup it could be ruined by something like mass Lanni income or Bara cost reduction. I prefer to run more towards unopposed GJ decks than choking myself.
Same my deck is unopposed based, but I had wanted to try out a new deck type to see how to use greyjoy in different ways.
Choke is the strongest GJ build around here, not unopposed or mill… to the point that GJ players get frustrated about not having competitive alternatives. Given you can reduce your opponent''s income with Winter and Burned and Pillaged, then steal his gold, he won''t be able to play many cards (not to mention a character who prevents reduction for non-nobles and another who discards a location - finish with Winter Marauders). Even Martell isn''t as frustrating as choke, because you still get to try with Martell.
I am not doubting the ability of GJ choke at all. Its just that with any other deck, it requires a bit of luck to not fall through. There are many ways for different houses to deal with chokes, unless they become unlucky.
Who is it that denies reduction on characters?
Gylbert Farwynd, from the Maester cycle (he is noble himself, but an ally).

It is not denying reduction on characters. It denies reduction on ALL cards which are not noble.
Miklos is correct. He denies reduction on non noble characters even your own so sometime he can be a bit of a pain. You just have to know when to marshal him and when not to.

than choking myself.
Insert autoerotic asphyxiation joke here. That is all.
