Bloody Scourge when on a Bolton controlled by another player

By Hand of Osiris, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I figured this would have been asked, but I couldn''t find it.

I know that I am the controller of the Scourge even if another player is controlling the Bolton Character.

However can I only trigger the Scourge if that character attacks me ("You win a challenge in which Bolton particpates") or can I use the Scourge whenever that character participates in a winning challenge vs anyoneâ–º

But read the card again. You need to win the challenge and the attached character needs to be participating. There''s nothing there about attack or defense. There is nothing there about the character needing to be on the winning side of the challenge. All that needs to happen is that the character is participating (whether you control it or not, whether on the winning side or not), and you need to win that challenge (whether attacking or defending, whether controlling the character or not).

So, if you lose control of the character the Scourge is attached to, it can attack you (and you win on defense), or you can attack the player - who declares it as a defender and loses.

thanks for the confirmation!

Please note also that (cit.) "Any time control of a character switches via card effects during a game, the new controlling player gains control of said character and all duplicates. Unless specified in game text, the new controlling player does not gain control of any attachments on said character ."

In that case what happens to any attachments on the bolton character if my opp doesnt gain control of them? Do they stay on the character? If so who can use them( i'll use bloody scourge as an example)? Does this mean i can still discard my opponents characters using a bloody scourge on a character my opponent controls?

I'm not entirely sure why Ikaros put in the information about the attachment not changing control with the attached character because it really has no bearing on the original question.

If an opponent takes control of a character that has an attachment on it, the attachment doesn't change control. That means that whoever controlled the attachment before the character changes control still controls the attachment after the character changes control. It's no different than playing an attachment on an opponent's character - you control the attachment, but the opponent controls the character.

As for the rest of it, that's what the original post was about: "what if I control the 'Bloody Scourge' attachment, but not the House Bolton character it is attached to?" And as mentioned before, so long as you (the controller of the attachment) wins a challenge in which the House Bolton character participates (which is much harder, but not impossible, to manage when you don't control the character), you (the controller of the attachment) can use the Sourge to discard a kneeling character.

You are still the controller of the attachment even if you are not the controller of the character. If the conditions are met (that character with the scourge attachment is in a challenge, regardless of who controls that character, and you win the challenge), then yes, you can still use the Scourge ability.

There are some attachments that you would not be able to use however, even though you are the controller. Such as the Valyrian Steel Link. You have to kneel the attached character to trigger this effect, so it is considered a cost of the effect. And you cannot pay costs with cards your opponent controls.

Just a thought, i know that if a card changes control any attachments still remain the control of the original perosn to play them (unless stated other wise)

so in this situation what would happen with the following, player A has Lannisport treasury with increased levy attached, and say player B steals control of the treasury, who gets the gold still for the increased levy? or would it be discarded if the treasury is stolen due to the "attach to a location you control"

(3.20) Attachment Restrictions
Any attachment that has a restriction (such
as "Lord or Lady only" or "attach to an
opponent's character") is immediately
discarded from play at any time that restriction
is not met, regardless of immunity. Such
restrictions are constant effects, and the
attachment should be immediately discarded
any time a restriction is not met including
during setup.

For example: Tom has played the card
Motley (Core Set B67) on Kris's House Tully
Recruiter (Core Set S21). Motley has the text:
"Attach to an opponent's character." Later in
the game, Tom uses Seductive Promise (Core
Set T175) to take control of the House Tully
Recruiter. Because the Recruiter is no longer
"an opponent's character" from the perspective
of Tom's Motley card, Motley is immediately
discarded from play.

That's your answer. If the attachment has a play restriction that references control of the card it attaches to, it's probably going to be discarded as illegal if control changes.
