Clarification on AO fight

By Jezzuz, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello,

I recently bought AH and am very pleased with it. Yet we encountred a small issue that I'd love to have solved.

The attack of AO ( Yog-Sototh ) reads something like :

- 1) Do a WILL(+1)-Check or loose smth ( Portal-Trophy )

- 2) All investigators w/o Trophy will be devoured

We had two different interpretations of this in our last match. Is it :

a) (1) happens and then (2) happens. So basically everyone that had his last token removed basically gets devoured.

OR

b) (1) happens. Next attack (2) happens. This would mean everyone that lost his last token will have at least one more turn until he/she gets devoured.

I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

Robert

We are still waiting for an official answer on this. At the moment, both theories have their fans ::laughter:: I guess some of the Older posters in this forum would go with "if your last trophy is removed, you're devoured". I'm still more comfortable with the other one: "if you have to discard, and can't, you're devoured" because it seems to me like that as long as you have trophies, you can feed the AO and survive.

But still. Play the way you prefer until the new FAQ will be published (and don't hold your breath in the meantime: we've been waiting for them for YEARS).

And sure, there will be tons of posts following this one saying "play this way or the other" ::laughter::

Play this way or the other!!! FIRST!!!

Seriously, Julia's right. We don't really know, but hey, congratulations on finding one of the bigger debates left! And for narrowing down the two positions by yourself! cool.gif

For the record, I played B when I first started eons ago, but as I got more experienced with the game and hooked in with the forums, I eventually switched over to A: roll the check, pay the price if necessary, then check your number of trophies. If zero, devoured.

For once I am really happy with a community, as my rather unprecise and slobbishly formulated post got two perfectly accurate answers without the usual flaming and accusations. I'm quite baffled to be honest.

Thanks.

I prefer B, because to me there should be a difference between person who can pay the toll once versus someone who can't. If the cost is one gate trophy, player 1 with two is fine for two rounds, player 2 is fine for one round with a single trophy, and player 3 who has none is devoured right away. If you play version A, there is no difference between the person who managed to get a trophy and the person who has no trophies.

I play B - for the reasons Longshot explained.

I'm not saying that you should play one way or another. I just feel that I should point out that there is actually a difference between investigators with 1 trophy and those with none even if you play A.

Under Start of Battle it says that every investigator without a gate trophy is devoured, that would mean they don't get to attack at all.

Besides, since the AO attacks after the investigators (unless you do epic battle), playing B would mean that an investigator with 1 trophy would get at least 2 attacks (compared to 0 for 0 trophies).

Still though I'm not sure witch way I prefer.

I''m with Julia corazon.gif ~ but seriously, for game mechanics, I appreciate that the Investigators can lose/discard/sacrifice their last token as a result/condition/requirment/cost of the AO''s attack and can still have one more go at it. But then, the rational, logical,reasoned-side kicks in and I see the arithmetic progression…

If the Investigator Starts the Final Battle with ''x'' trophies, then…

Zero Trophies, no attacks and immediately devoured

One Trophy, one attack and then devoured

Two Trophies, two attacks and then devoured…

Anyway, just use Julia''s razor (which is not a different kind of Arkham razor, but a quick way to erase this debate): start winning BEFORE the AO awakens (I went to FB only three times in the last 81 games. Needless to say, I''ve lost all three times ::laughter: :) .

Then, really, no need to have this fixed :: devil::
