Rogue Trader Character Classes

By rustorod, in Rogue Trader

Are the classes offered in the core Rogue Trader rule book? Just wondering I have a part that can run from 6-8 characters. Im thinking there would be some redundancy of classes. Does Into the Storm help diversify the classes so they are all not cookie cutter? Do any of the other supplements offer new classes, or modifications to the core classes?

Thanks.

Mike

The standard classes in the main book are: Rogue Trader, Arch Militant, Astropath Trandscendent, Explorator, Missionary, Navigator, Seneschal and Void Master.

Into the Storm adds Kroot Mercenary and Ork Freebooter as new character classes. It also includes the following alternate career ranks that can be taken, offering diversions and branches from the standard career paths:

Acquisitionist (Seneschal)

Augmenticist (any except Explorator, Missionary, Ork and Kroot)

Calixian Privateer (Rogue Trader)

Drusian Adherent (any except Astropath, Explorator, Ork and Kroot)

Flight Marshal (Void Master)

Genetor (Explorator)

Gland Warrior (Arch-Militant)

Kroot Shaper (Kroot, obviously)

Legend of the Expanse (Any)

Navis Scion (Navigator)

Ork Kommando (Ork)

Ork Mekboy (Ork)

Transubstantial Initiate (Astropath)

Torchbearer (Missionary)

Xenographer (Any except Ork and Kroot)

Into the Storm also introduces "Ship Roles", which are basically jobs onboard ship that are a separate thing to your character class (though obviously some classes are better suited to some jobs than others. Examples include: First Officer, Master Helmsman, Master Gunner, Chief Chirurgeon, Ship's Confessor, Purser, Ship's Steward, and a whole bunch of others.

Each of these of these roles gives you a small bonus to certain tasks, but you need to have certain qualifications to get the job in the first place.

Hostile Aquisitions adds the following alternate ranks:

Arch Heretek (any except Kroot, Orks, Navigators, Astropaths or Missionaries)

Cold Trade Broker (Any)

Drusian Charlatan (Any except Explorator, Ork and Kroot)

House Operative (Any except Rogue Trader, Kroot and Ork)

Manhunter (Any)

Reaver (Any Human)

Swashbuckler (Any)

Secessionist (Any)

I think that is it. I don't remember any other stuff of this nature in the other books, but I may well have forgotten something.

The other point to raise is the oft overlooked "Elite Advances" - essentially any character can learn any talent or skill outside their normal advances, the GM just has to put a price on it (and agree a suitable explaination.

For example the Rogue Trader PC in our group has been indoctrinated into a local Death Cult and so we worked out a bunch of available skills and talents they could teach him. Guidance for pricing such things is in Into the Storm (in our case there are roleplay "cost" elements as well as the raw XP).

Likewise for a long time we had two Arch Militants in our group with no real overlap at all - there's a lot of scope within the basic careers.

Added to all that you *can* mix and match with careers from the other games (particularly Dark Heresy) if you wish - but "crossovers" like that are fraught with their own pitfalls - search the forums for more details if you are interested.

In short - there's LOTS of scope in the core book as written, but don't feel hampered by the advances on teh page - if a player wants to flex things a little to make a uinque PC agree on a price and give it a go.

Don't forget specializations.

Arch Militant: Weapon Master (Melee / Pistol / Basic / Heavy). What type of fighter are you? Do you favour getting in close and slicing them, or are you long-range heavy ordnance sniper? Or do you prefer cowboy gunslinger style?

Voidmaster: Master of (Small Craft / Ship / Gunnery / Augurs). Which is your specialty? Are you an ace fighter pilot, radar savant, ships helmsman or a dead-eye cannoneer?

As for other classes; for example there are many types of explorators. Are you a mechanical monster murdermachine, a wide-read knowledge specialist of many skills or something in between?

You can have multiple operatives of same class and have work for each if everyone has their own niche of specialty in which they can shine. Sure, it makes some work to give everyone a piece of action the pie, but that's life.

Alternately, you could import (with some extra work required) other classes from DH.

Thanks all for the input that looks good. Gives the group some diversity.

Thanks.

Also the synergy of the games means you have no one man show too.

You need a good party variation to tackle all possible tests.

Can you update this now that we're getting no more products and so every single thing is out?

Yeah I think that the community should come together to work on unifying the systems. From what I've seen here, and on /tg/ at the moment there are many independent homebrewers doing the same menial tasks (just as listing every talent and skill in excel) which is a horrendous waste of manhours.

The first task would obviously be to list every talent and skill from every single 40k rpg book (divided into columns for each system). That's how you tell the difference in the systems, there will be some talents that are the same in every system and some that have minor differences and some that don't exist or have major differences.

Regarding the actual thread I found a spreadsheet called Rogue Trader Combined Spreadsheet which has a list of Alternate Career Ranks.

There are 23 in total (not all can be taken at level 1).

Not trying to make eople move forums but reddit has a 40k RPG forum that I'm a member off and its a fair interesting bunch there.
Might just want to keep that in mind if this place is closed when the license deal ends - r/40krpg

Unfortunately Reddit isn't particularly conductive to the kind of discussion that best suits this game in my opinion. The issue being that posts will fall off the page instead of gathering discussion over time.

Sadly so with reddit, I wish it was more forum like than it is.
