Gifts of the Gods

By PrinceOfMadness, in Black Crusade Rules Questions

Hey all, quick question regarding Gifts of the Gods.

Under the header Gifts of the Gods, page 290, paragraph 3:

"...a character may modify the result of his roll for a Gift [of] Chaos by a number up to his Infamy Bonus..."

I always read this as the character can modify the result of his d100 roll by a number of digits equal to his Infamy Bonus - ie, if a player has an Infamy Bonus of 4 and rolls a 57 (Intelligent Cyst), he can modify his roll up to 4 to either 53 or 61.

However, one of my players argues that the result of the roll is actually the Gift received - ie, if a player rolls a 57 (Intelligent Cyst), he could modify the result by 4 places ranging from Icon of Blasphemy to Warped Appearance.

While the first option seems (to me) to be RAI, I can see how the wording could be ambiguous. I appreciate any input.

I think your interpretation is correct. Notice that certain Gifts are a larger area of numbers than others? Most are 2, but some are as high as 5. If you adjusted by the number of places on the chart, this wouldn't be so meaningful. There are options like Tentacle that are not very good, but are clearly meant to take up a lot of room on the char, presumably so that you have a higher chance of getting them, and so that it's more difficult to adjust away from them.

I thought the same as your player until a friend had me reread it. The interpretation seems to wish you to modify the roll .

It clearly says that you modify the roll; the player you mention is arguing that you modify the result of the roll. It's hardly ambiguous when you look at it that way.

I'd say modifying the roll as well, but that's just parroting whatever everyone else said.

So how about I suggest whenever a player gets a failing, roll behind your screen and fudge the most embarrassing result instead?
