Kingswood Trail question

Hi all.

My questions is this;

To activate Kingswood Trail's response (see link) do I put it into shadows from my hand, paying the 2 gold? I did read that cards can only be put into Shadows during the Marshalling phase and during Setup. Does this response, as I think, bypass this rule? Then later on I can pay the Card Cost of 1 to bring it out of Shadows ready to use again next round?

Have I got this right or completely backward?

My friends and I are just starting to play proper games.

Kind regards,

No, this Response is designed to be activated after the card has been brought out of shadows. Otherwise, it would read "Put Kingswood Trail into Shadows from your hand." As a general rule (accept for Event cards) nothing in your hand can activate abilities (indeed, they do not even HAVE those abilities) unless they specify otherwise.

That means that in order to use the ability, you first have to Marshall the card into Shadows for 2 gold (or by using City of Shadows, or lowing its cost with Twilight Market), then later bring it out of Shadows (at which point it doesn't do anything).

Then, when you declare attackers for a power challenge, you can activate it, and it goes back into Shadows a part of the activation cost.

Think of it like a location you have to discard as a cost of its ability, only instead it goes back into Shadows.

Brilliant, thanks for the speedy response.

So essentially each time I want to use this card I must pay the 1 Gold to bring it out of Shadows at the start of the phase and then return it to Shadows after I have declared a power challenge. I don't need to pay 2 Gold again to put it into Shadows?

Correct, returning it to Shadows is a cost of its ability, and is different from paying 2 gold to Marshal a card into Shadows. Much like if a card allows you to "put" a character "into play," you don't have to pay its Gold Cost.

Thats really cleared up the question for me.

This card seems worthwhile to run in my Knights deck as I have access to a lot of Power Challenges!

I love this card. I worry about Newly Made Lord, but then I think "hey, in marshalling it will be in shadows if im using it every turn" and just put it in my deck.
