Depressed I can't play Greyjoy without Winds of winter

By hungryhippo2, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

More people need to complain to FFG. This is unacceptable. I am depressed and fear I may resort to pokemon ccg or something horrible.

I'm confused.

What is it about the Winds of Winter chapter pack that makes you think you can't play Greyjoy without it?

Or is it the plot?

Either way, I don't understand why you think you can't play without them.

I believe it is a case of hyperbole to get the point across he wants that chapter pack made available again. Sounds like about the worst way of accomplishing something to me, but he probably feels a little better for it.

its the white raven.

But you can play Grteyjoy without it. You can even play Winter and choke without it in GJ.

I don't blame the OP for being upset about certain key cards being unavailable to them because of them not being reprinted. White Raven is actually a very strong card to have in GJ choke and Cotter Pyke is expensive as heck. In addition to having counters to Black Ravens(Song of Summer/Winds of Winter CPs are the only ones with Carrion Birds). Sure, they could add the Ill Tidings event, but that is turning the deck into something they may not want it to be.

Now, I don't think I'd be suicidal over it, but I'd really like some of those CPs reprinted as well.

If you don't need them for regionals, just proxy them in. Who cares, really.

I'm not saying that the pack is not useful... I am saying an emo post full of hyperbole is not going to result in the CP getting reprinted faster. If what he wants is to build a specific Winter build then yes, he needs that pack. But that isn't what he said.

I definitely agree with that.

I felt the pain of this as well. Of course, it was only when I wanted to play a GJ Choke build. Cotter isn't an alternative. White Raven + A Time For Ravens is necessary. The plot Winds of Winter is an A+ Choke plot as well. You also get Ice Fisherman, Carrion Bird, and the Kings of Winter agenda - all crucial to most choke builds.

The CP isn't on the face of the planet - that I'm sure of! 30th page of Google results until it finally said "dude, quit looking, all these results are the same".

It's nothing to get depressed about, but it is a bummer to not be able to play the deck you want because the cards just aren't available. Card availability was supposed to be a strength of the LCG, after all.

Actually that's a common misconception with LCG: its strength lies in non-random (recently triplicate as well) card distribution.
FFG's CEO originally announced that Chapter Packs would phase out after running out of print. This is harder to do of course with certain packs with key mechanics (such as the Winds of Winter CP in question) and a solution should be announced soon hopefully.

I hope it's a straight triplicate cycle reprint (with errata implemented), but it can end up being a deluxe box expansion with key cards from A Time for Ravens CP cycle. Whatever it is I hope FFG makes up its mind very soon for the loyal fans out there.

Not to dig this up again, but someone (Alpha?) linked us to this in the last thread.

No Rare Chasing

LCGs® have no rare or promo cards that need to be chased. This ensures that games are determined by a player’s deck building skills and play strategies, rather than who spent the most money in pursuit of hard-to-find ultra rare cards. The fixed format means that every player has equal access to every card needed to build his or her deck.

It sounds like easy access is an intended strength of the format as well.

Hate to play the devil's advocate here as we are on the same boat so to speak, but that paragraph only addresses the fact that distribution is fixed and no where does it guarantee that products will not be out of print for indefinite periods of time or that that it will not phase out.

FFG's CEO announcement of CP cycles phasing out was at the start of launch of the LCG products, well before the site migration so I do not have a reference link to the quote, but more 1 person seems to remember this (so I'm not imagining things). Obviously FFG can change their mind about their distribution practices and seemed to have done so by reprinting some of the cycles (cycle 3 and 4 were given a triplicate make-over even).
A few months ago, Christian Peterson also mentioned that the remaning first two non-triplicate cycles will be reprinted in the x3 format once they run out ( see here, reply #9 ). However, no announcements have been made since the dearth of some of the CPs in the A Time for Ravens cycle was made apparent on the board. I just hope it's a simple problem of logistics and that FFG will not renege and go back to their prior stance of phasing out. We will have to wait and see.

Having cards (and a large number of them, at that) that are legal for tournament play, but are not readily available for purchase makes this a second-rate game. To ensure a fair and competitive tournament environment (as well as being friendly to new players), every player needs to have equal access to every card that is tournament legal.

Phasing out chapter packs is fine if the cards are no longer tournament-usable.

Agree with this completely. I am trying to build Greyjoy choke. The carrion birds are nice too for other decks I use. I understand I can proxy them but I'm talking regionals here. The LCG aspect the game appealed to me till I found out some of boosters were no longer LIVING! :(

And for the poster that said complaining about these doesn't make them get reprinted any faster. While that may be true, I think it's important to voice your opinion when a product feels to meet your expectations (whatever the product may be). It would be nice to see a statement from FFG.

Really hope these are going to be reprinted. I just built a Grejoy choke deck for a friend interested in the game. He asked me what was with all the white raven proxies and I told him I only had one playset and that I couldn't get more because the seasons cycle is out of print. He looked at me and said he was ready to buy the chapter packs to build the deck but what's the point of an LCG if cards going to be out of print.

Guess he won't be getting into the game anymore. At least not until they reprint a set that is completely integral to a core mechanic in the game (summer/winter).

Did FFG announce that they won't be reprinting this set?

They haven't announced anything. Rumor has it that they will BUT because they will reprint the entire cycle, the fact that there is a lot of other Chapter Packs in stock, they risk distributor ire by forcing them to dump old crappy product. The issue really is that other than the seasons most of the traits have been ignored from the first two cycles.

I'm pretty sure my local game store still has both Winds and Song sitting on the shelf where the newer members of my meta have ignored them for several months with hopes of a reprint. We game on Mondays, I will verify this tomorrow night and if we have them I will post again with my email for anyone who wants one.

Ooh, hopefully they do and I can pick up an extra copy or two when I'm there for regionals! ;)

Or you can do something like tell FFG. They have links at the bottom of the page so you can send them something directly. Much more likely to actually have an impact… unless you send them something like your original post. Be open, be honest, and don''t be emo. You''ll probably get a much better response (and by that I mean you might actually get a response) than a thread devoted to hyperbole on a forum run by a ofreign partner that they don''t really monitor unless someone here mails them and links to it.

OK, they do have 1 copy each of Winds and Song…
I talked to the store owner and he said he is aware that some of his products, including both CPs, are either out of print or very difficult to find right now and that he could offer them for sale online and make a bigger profit, but he said he would prefer to sell them to people that come to his store. He said he's met a lot of great people from out of town who have stopped by the store by chance or to purchase something that they heard he had in stock when they cannot find it elsewhere. I could purchase the packs myself and offer them on Ebay or something, but instead I am going to respect his decision and leave them for sale where they are. I'm pretty sure they will still be here in a few weeks when we have regionals.
