Mono weapon upgrade

By sister-zee, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

hi i have just upgraded my sword with mono but it states that the weapon is no longer primative. our GM is saying that it means we don't have the correct training with the weapon and need to roll intelligence to see if we can use it, where i believe that it means that the weapon type is no longer prim so does more damage against primative armour eg las vs mesh. if the gm is correct and i dont have the correct weapon training talent which one do i need.

Well it is still a Primitive Weapon, but the dam is not. IE modern Armor is not x2 against it

Angel is correct..your GM is obviously either illiterate, missed the rules in the book that clearly state what mono does to a weapon upgraded with it, or is simply being a ****....( sorry i call it as i see it and any good GM will READ the material BEFORE using it so they know what it supposed to be going on and how to work it ) apparently you have a Noob GM

Mono is an upgrade that removes the primative TRAIT...it doesnt change the weapon itself ( IE how its used etc ) It stands for MONO molecular edged...allowing it to do full damage against modern armours ( Primative trait means as Angel said...the armour value is doubled against the weapon when determining soak value before any damage is applied to the actual target )..but with the mono upgrade..it removes the Primative trait AND gives the weapon +2 Penetration...so for example

You have a PC weilding a sword ( 1d10 Dmg 0 Pen ) against a guardsmen with flak armour ( AP 4 )...your PC hits and rolls damage...the guards flak armour will count as having AP 8!...so your PC rolls damage and maxs it..ok..thats 10 points plus your Strength bonus...lets say additional 4 points for total of 14 points damage..well that AP 8 automatically removes 8 points of damage..leaving 6...now you remove the guards Toughness bonus in damage....lets say his bonus is 4 points..ok that means that 6 is now a 2 for total damage at best your PC can hope to do..its going to be a long fight...

Now SAME scenario only your PC is using a MONO enhanced sword ( Dmg 1d10 2Pen )...PC rolls and hits...then maxs damage again...now instead of the original equation of 10+4=14 -8-4=2 ) you will have the guard flak armour only reducing damage by TWO points ( the normal 4 points it gives minus the Pen Value of 2 for the upgrade ) making the equation like this instead 10+4=14-2-4=8...so your same PC with the same sword with mono upgrade will do alot more damage to modern armours than if it was a normal blade as a mono-blade counts as a modern blade...and all primative armours values are now HALF for it...making the PC doubly deadly against anyone wearing any primative armours as well...

Fortunately, your GM is wrong. And you're question right here is excellent proof as to how to respond to his issue. What is a mono-sword? A shock weapon? Hardly. A power sword? You gotta be kidding.

As above, it just removes the quality, but the exact type and nature of the weapon remains the same; it is still a primitive weapon.

You can call all melee weapons under the Primitive group Primary weapons instead, and change the talent to Melee Weapon Training [Primary]. That should clear up any confusion.

As others have said, the Mono upgrade doesn't change the class of the weapon, which is Primitive, it removes the Primitive Quality from the weapon. Special qualities are listed under the Special column on the weapon tables.
