Tyranid Unique Species

By Matt101, in Deathwatch Gamemasters

Alright ladies and gents I got and idea for you all.

I am in the middle of creating a Tyranid species for my custom Hive fleet Xiphon, Right now it is called the "heavy gaunt" till I can come up with a better name.

I am ironing down the weapons and stats for this creature and I was wonder, What kinda of species can you or have come up with for your own hive fleets?

I would be appreciative to hear from you all. :D

Ok here is one of my tyranid creations!

Armagaunt

This unique gaunt species has been encountered any number of times during the first tyranid incursions to the current conflicts, most notable Hive fleet Xiphon incurisions lead to encounters with these creatures. There have been many reports though all lacking in detail, the known survivors has given the biologis magos a description that this guant resembles a mixture of the gaunt genus and the more formidable tyranid warriors. Its posture and veracity resembles that of the warriors while retaining some of the gaunts sleek features and single weapon capacity. Standing at 6 feet tall and armed with interesting weapons this monster is armed for close assault and room cleaning. Some reports suggest this creature may be adapted to fly but has to sacrifice armour to do so. One unique report came from a captain of the 789th Volkaren grenadiers saying that these big brutes of gaunts lead the Other lesser tyranid organisms on other fronts were other synapse creatures are not present. If any or all of these reports are true there maybe more sub-species of this creature then we originally thought....

Hello and welcome! You seem very keen, and kind to offer yer creation on here, so i thought i'd say g'day! And thanx, of course...one can never have enough unique tyranid critters! Keep up the good work, and keep havin' fun!

Mission Designation: Diplomatic/Tau (see file ref. AR1-1)

After-action reports indicate the Qarvar Deeps of the ocean had been polluted with a heavy concentration of Tyranid bio-spores.

As it turns out, a Tau "science" vessel carrying various Tyranid bio-samples had crashed, sinking into the Deeps, and the integrity of Tyranid bio-spore containment canisters was compromised during the crash, releasing massive amounts of Tyranid bio-pollutants into the oceanic region known as the Qarvar Deeps, a region known for its proliferation of algae and a dense fern-like kelp. As it so happens, these algae and kelp were also known nutrient sources for a bounty of krill (in the order of several million megatons), which are used in various and sundry food products and rations throughout the Imperium for the content of their essential oils. In turn, the krill are the main food source for a gargantuan breed of aquatic mammal known as the whalid. Whalid are a particularly prized source of food (among its other uses) for the local population, but for reasons unknown to the Administratum they are not hunted in great numbers today as they were in centuries past (See "Endangered Species" file+++PURGED+++).

As one can easily surmise, the ecosystems of the Qarvar Deeps were greatly unbalanced. Algae and kelp (the main dietary source of nutrition for the krill) were tainted with Tyranid bio-spores, causing them to grow at monstrously accelerated rates, which in turn raised the ambient temperatures of the Deeps, forcing tainted krill to migrate into surrounding oceanic regions to avoid "boiling" to death...where they were soon fed upon by grazing pods of whalid.

Kill-Team Exetor, while negotiating with Tau diplomats on site, had the unfortunate opportunity to witness first-hand the devastating effects of the Tau folly. Whalid, horribly mutated and hybridized from their exposure to Tyranid bio-spores, attacked the Tau recovery barge. Evidently (natural) whalid possess an intellect greater than originally cataloged. Tyranid hybridizing seemed to enhance this intellect, and the Kill-Team (along with their Tau allies) were nearly lost to coordinated assaults from ravenous whalid in search of new prey upon which to feed...

(The remaining documents of this file have been "misplaced". Administratum Adept Xeel was executed for his laxity in archiving protocols.)

So, yeah...while the Kill-Team negotiated with the (nervous and secretive) Tau, I hit them with a pod of very hungry Tyranid-whale hybrids.

I''ve always wondered what would happen when Tyranids invades a water world so have a few ideas sorry no rules of any kind yet but hope to create some soon. Names sounds kinda dumb or hard to pronouce but these are off the top of my head ideas.

Krakinnofex - Similar to Mawlocs/Trygons built to swim at high speeds and suprise attack ships.

Rippirhanas - Rippers of the sea. Small fast hunt in groups to attack larger sea dwelling creatures.

Rhincodofex - (think giant whale shark) Giant gapping large mouthed tyranid who swims the oceans wide mouthed scooping up anything in its path (Potential mission could include team being swallowed)

Melanocetinfex - Deep sea dweller (see humpback anglerfish) Large tyranid species with built in light source to attract prey.

You can''t really just put -fex at the end of the word. The word Carnifex is used as butcher in Latin, but literally translates to "Meat-Maker", fex being derived from Facio, to make or do, and Carni is about, ya know, meat.

So Carnifex actually isn''t a very pliable term for this sort of thing.

As a TableTob Warhammer 40K Tyranid Player, for couple of years now, im familiar with the lore in their rulebooks.

The latest installment saw some of the previously dreamt of tyranids given form.

before i go into detail on what i think would be nice, let me react to your posts:

The ArmaGaunt, the idear of a new step between gaunt and warrior sounds nice. though 6 feet tall, thats 1.8 meters…. where a warrior is 2 and a gaunt 1.2. sounds a bit big. Especialy if its modeled after the gaunts posture of moving on 4 legs. Id suggest you reduce it to 5 foot ( 1.5 M ) or even 4.5 foot. 1.3 meters. as it will than be a bigger version of the gaunt.

Or was your intention to make a smaller version of the Warrior? so it walks on two legs, and has four limbs to attack with. reading your one weapon aptitude i doubt this though. The rest of your idear sounds nice. a psycic version would have a bigger head or headplate though to tune in on the hive mind. The flying one having less armor is also a good decicion i think.

As for the ocean tyranids, spores are used to infect planets with rapid growt, maximizing a planets biomass wich then will be eaten by the fleet. IF such spores would come into contact with the ocean life the Kelp indeed would grow enormous, but the temperature would not reach boiling point. it might be to hot for the likes of the shrimp, true, but not boiling as that would destroy the kelp itself.

Secondly annything that eats the algae or kelp would turn mutant too. so all the shrimp would grow larger and larger the wales would grow gargantous. Even more the algae and kelp would release new spores to spread. Within 2 weeks from planetfall on hard survaces spores cover the entire planet. on planet fall in water this is verry much quicker. Id say in a week all the oceans and rivers ending in them would be infected. From these normal unsuspecting animals marine and landbased drink and eat. spreading the spores even further. and so more than just marine life would start to grow mutated and big.

Thirdly spores infecting a host organism enhance the organisms natural abilities. If it was a hunter it will hunt more and ferousiously to sate its appetite. if it was a burrowing creature it will burrow deeper constanly thingking its still not deep enough to escape what lurks above. In the final stages of the spore mutation creatures with semi intelligence will become enslaved to the hivemind. who uses them to assault pockets of resistance.

So if the Tau or marines burned kelp and creatures more would be driven to those locations. guards on patrol will go missing as giant predators sneak up and ****** them away. eventually fortified positions will be attacked by rampaging beasts from the surrounding lands. these can ben verriousios rats numbering in the billions, or raging elephants forming a battering ram.

AS for the names, i agree that putting Fex after things might first sound and look cool, but it actually is not. Most infected creatures retain features of their original form, but than bigger more specialised to their use. A tiger would for example become trice as big and have elongated fangs and huge claws. but the natives would still call it a tiger, albeit perhaps commenting on its size being large or huge. only after repeated attacks of such organisms will people start giving things a name. ( think about the children fearing things under their beds, it starts with the fear, only later will they start naming them, a mechanism to make the unknown more familiar and thus less scary) Defenders might refer to the tiger as the Savage stalkers, or Alpha tigers. from this namign and the manny reports, if there are survivors, a well educated zoologist could then seek out the creature, capture one alive and give it a fitting official name. we humans are officially homo homo sapien, still we call ourselfs man, human, dictator, criminal, murderer or even disabilitated for those with mutations. So If you realy want some tyranid names id suggest you think of the creature, how it behaves and attacks, and how defenders would name it accordingly. ( if you seen the how to tame your dragon movie, the blackk dragon theirin is named the night fury, as it always attacks at night. )

Having replied thus, I will only say this on the tyranid species you can think of. each species is bred for a purpose. hence it will exagerate the use of that purpose. Carnifex have armor and huge claws, to stand incoming fire while they slowly advance and crak open the hardest defences. Gaunt are cheap and lightwaigth. makign them easy to produce and thus they attack in endless numbers. depleting the ammunition of the enemies. thats what their for. Rippers are small enough to crawl into olmost anything and eating evrything they find,., hence a huge jaw with a smaller body behind it , if the teeth fit the rest will follow.

So think of what creatures inhabit your planets, how will the spores affect them. and if you really want a specific tyranid creature think of its role in the feeding cycle of the hive fleet. infect - feed - rout out resistance - consume - move on . make it fit and exagerate their use. and you will have a nice tyranid on your hands.

I agree with the names I was just suggesting and idea for them in a quick "during work" reply tothe thread.

Just wondering if there is anywhere I can find more details on Norn Queens

Thank you for the advice and opinion also being a 40k table top player I respect your insight. The main thing I wanted to do with the armagaunt is basically up the size of the gaunt aswell as durability (thought it doesn't look like much). This is only phase 1 draft so far and waitying for more input.
