1st Edition Compatability?

By Tromdial, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Kind of early on to ask and may only lead to speculation, but does anyone know if beyond the character conversion pack (does that include monsters?) how feasible is it to play previous maps from 1e to their entirety? I never got to play my expansions that I bought but the new game seems to me like it will streamline stuff down to be quicker, so I wonder if I will finally be able to play the rest of 1e (which is a lot) this year and into next.

Most of all, really want to play a level with the rolling rock trap, which is probably missing from the 2e core set.

Out of everything that I have seen so far I haven't seen any equipment cards. Does anyone know if the 2nd will have any? I know that my gaming group loved the looting the overload's dungeons, so I hope that they keep them around in some form or another. Also, does anyone know if it is possible to use the items from the 1st with the 2nd?

Now that I understand the monster figurines will have 2e cards too, it makes me wonder if the rest of the maps will be replayable again but using only the rest of what the 2e supplies; otherwise, what is the point of reprinting the monsters? If you look closely, feats still exist (Rune Mastery) along with weapon and item cards in the big jpg from the latest preview if you look really closely.

I imagine equipment cards are going to be revamped to the point of being obsolete in 2E. Campaign play is a primary focus for 2e, and many of those silver and gold treasure cards give a SERIOUS edge to players, and monsters scale quickly. I'd hazard a guess to say that treasures might be something rare and wonderful, while the actual "equipment" might be something that is bought between adventures, and I'd imaging bonuses would be toned down to reflect the length of the campaigns.

I'm thinking of something similar to HeroQuest. That's not a bad thing, mind you, but I think focus is going to be made on single-use or short term items. Just a thought.

I wonder about Overlord characters, like I have Sea of Blood campaign. Will those be included too as well as the generals?

There's been no hint that the Conversion Kit will contain OL sheets; I think OLs will work differently in 2E compared to how they did in RtL or SoB.

I'm sure there will be equipment cards of some description. Finding items and equipping new gear is part of the core experience of almost any dungeon crawl. =)

That said, I highly doubt that 1e equipment will be compatible with 2e. For one thing, 2e used defense dice, so all the armor/shields in 1e would no longer make sense as written. Besides which, the copper/silver/gold division was too dramatic, and is one of thing I really hope will be corrected in 2e.

The point of reprinting the monsters is so that they can be used on the 2e maps. We don't know how spawning works yet in 2e, but this implication is that with the conversion kit you'll be able to "spawn" groups of 1e monsters while playing 2e.

As far as playing 1e maps using 2e rules, it's certainly an idea that has been raised before. I sincerely doubt FFG will provide any official rules for doing this, but I'm also pretty sure it won't be THAT hard to kitbash a way of doing it, for those who are so inclined. I know its one of the first things on my "fanmade to-do list" with this game, after I've played the core 2e game long enough. =)

There's no official word on whether or not the LTs are considered "figures" to be included in the conversion kit. None of the promo pics of the conversion kit seem to include LTs, though, so there's that.

I do seem to recall reading something that implied Alric Farrow would still be kicking around in 2e, although his role might be dramatically different than what it was in RtL. There's also at least one pic from 2e with a token that uses Merrick Farrow's art, although again, there's no promise that this image will represent Merrick in 2e (FFG has been recycling art through the Terrinoth games for ages now, and they don't always correspond to the same things in different games.)

In my opinion the conversion kit will not have covert such minis like leutnants from RtL or SoB becouse figures for them where always optional. Besides in the core set for 2e there will be tokens representing such characters like Alric Farrow - leutnant from RtL but I think that he will not be a figure. Those tokens will be used in the quest The Masquarade Ball to represend the mask for monsters and nothing more. The Conversion Kit will have cards for all heroes from Descent 1e + expansions + promo figures and cards for all the monsters figures from Descent 1e + expansions.

Oh there are equipment cards - look at the right of Hero Sheet. But on the first map/quest there are no chests that's why we do not see ale tresures. I just hope that in this edition there will be no cooper, silver and gold tresures becouse that broke the balanace. Let's just hope the equipment is only in shops to buy and players can choose what they want - the sytuations when a warrior opened a chest and got me something useless like a magic staff where not nice.
