Deadly/Renown timing question

By JackT, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

What is the outcome of the following scenario:

The players:

Stark: Roose Bolton, Shaggydog

Targ: Ser Barristan Selmy (the new one)

Roose has some sort of burn attachment on him. (I forget which)

1) Stark declares Roose and Shaggy (+3) as attackers

2) Targ declares Selmy as a defender

3) Selmy uses his ability and discards to kill Roose

4) Shaggy is now 1 str

5) Selmy uses his ability and discards to kill Shaggy

Questions:

1) Does Selmy die from Shaggy's deadly?

2) Does Selmy get Renown?

2) Yes

You are killing the attacking characters before you even get to challenge resolution. But there are still participating characters on the Deadly side, so you continue with the challenge, anyway. When you get to the point where you resolve the challenge, the attacker counts 0 because he has no characters (and no STR) in the challenge. The defender counts whatever Selmy's STR is. Assuming it is at least 1, the Targ player wins the challenge (as the defender).

1) The attacker has no characters in the challenge when it resolves, so he has no characters with Deadly participating in the challenge when it resolves, either. Since Deadly means nothing until challenge resolution (it is resolved passively after the challenge resolves), the fact that none of the Deadly characters made it to challenge resolution is vital. It means that there is effectively no Deadly to resolve. Since there is no Deadly to resolve, Selmy won't die for Deadly.

2) As outlined above, the defender wins the challenge. Since the defender won the challenge, Selmy will, of course, get power for Renown. A win is a win, right?
