Some careers and advanced careers have 3 sockets instead of two. Some careers with three sockets require you to have completed 2 previous careers before entering that career. See Wizard and Witch Hunter Captain. But some of these 3 socket careers do not indicate any requirements, such as noble Lord or Duellist. Am I missing a rule of thumb, or can my players jump right into a 3 socket career for their second career?
3 Sockets vs. 2 in Careers
the sockets do not necessarily imply if the career is rank 2 or 3. although i think for the knight carrers and all those others that came with omens of war, there is a pretty specific order in which you can run through em.
if it doenst state so on the back, then there is a the "trait" feature still, which puts such careers into a little order, something like basic must be done before intermediate can be done...
Thanks, I'll take a look. That's kind of what I'm talking about. In my game I have a their who has, by his acts of valor risen into the noble realm and been granted lands....long story obviously, but it works really well story wise, a rags to riches story of heroism. But, I'm not sure what kind of noble I should steer him toward. I was thinking duelist, but only because of his affinity for pistols.
I initially house ruled that any 2nd career could take 3 sockets (even if it was basic). Then I finally decided to ditch socketing all together. We've never looked back since ditching the socketing mechanic.

The traits such as intermediate don't have a mechanical effect other than affecting the cost of entering the career from another. By the rules as written, if there isn't a prerequisite on the back of the card any career could theoretically be a second career.
Yes, you can move into a three slot career from a basic career. Is it worth it? Depends. A lot of the three talent careers available to second rank characters don't have fantastic career abilities. The witch hunter's career ability is essentially another talent which he can use in a load of different situations. Veteran...well veteran's special ability is a bit crap when you're using a great weapon anyway. The hope is that you are trading off a more capable career ability for the extra talent slot, which you might lose in a later career anyway. Also, if you are thinking like this then your also thinking two maybe three careers ahead...
...It's cute that you think your character will live that long...

Such optional rule has been introduced in the Hero's Call.

Well then that's both optional and not an option for those of us STILL WAITING FOR THE SUPPLEMENT.
Err... sorry. Apparently my jealousy is showing.
I wouldn't worry about stuff like that since most people have been sort of house ruling a lot of it anyway. Of course, that doesn't really mitigate how you probably feel about not getting all the other stuff in the supplement. Stinger for you. It'll get to you, honest.

I've just got one thing to say about that, bro:

My rule of thumb is:
Basic requires rank 1 or higher
Intermediate requires rank 2 or higher
Advanced requires rank 3 or higher
etc.
This fits with the intent of careers and career progression for those "series" careers.

What he said. Every time my watchman player suggested he should move into assassin I was ready to clock him.
