The Care and Feeding of Ogres

By RARodger, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Using spoilers provided on-line one of my players decided to play an Ogre Maneater. The party is being sent on a mission into the wilderness and I’m looking for suggestions on tracking his meat consumption. In the past I’ve never tracked this sort of thing very closely, but since the eating penalty seems like a pretty good balance to his huge Strength score I want to do it right.

Since they will be trekking through the wilderness they’re going to have to either carry or hunt their food. Any thoughts to the encumbrance rating of food? And what skill is used for hunting?

My initial thought is to give the player tokens representing the minimum amount of meat he must eat to avoid the misfortune penalty and then make sure we track time a little more closely than we normally do. But any advice would be welcome.

we normall do not play with encumbrance, but i would always say it depends on the food, is it a boar? cause then its freakin heave ;-)

whenever i put my party in the wilderness, i need them to have at least one meal a day. and if they are trekking, they will need meat. so if it is no meat or no meal at all on a day, they will start suffering penalties. i'd start with a misfortune and increase up to 3 challenge, depending on how long the PCs are starving

for the skill hunting: it depends on the way you are hunting. hunting animals with a bow will be ballistic skill/coordination and hunting with my hand weapon, which is possible, but hard, would be coordination as well for me, since you need to coordinate your movement and action towards the animal you are hunting.
spotting an animal is definitely nature lore, and for me that check MUST be perfomed in order to be able to hunt anything

and then they will have to cook the meal, raw meat isnt really good. just putting it on a fire won't make it taste well. it might need herbs and a little skill. cooking would also go under nature lore or maybe even folklore for me...

Normally I would handle it like this: Nature Lore (Ag), Observation and Ballistic Skill trained provide a fortune dice. One check needs 1 hour of searching/hunting for food.
One success: enough food for one person for 1 day

In case of a maneater you need maybe 6 successes.

OR you organize a deer hunt every day and add a misfortune dice every day you stay in the same area. A deer hunt would be like checks on Nature Lore, Observation, ballistic skill and what not.
