Hank Samson vs Nightgaunt

By arkhamresident, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

So if Hank fails a combat check against a Nightgaunt does he immediately make the Horror check and then go through the nearest gate OR get sucked into the gate then make the Horror check? I purposely had Hank fail a combat check while in the Dreamlands so he could get back to Arkham but if the Horror check would've driven him insane I'd like to know where he'd end up.

Same goes for a Dimensional Shambler.

After failing the Combat check, you have to apply the penalties for the failed check. So, the Nightgaunt carries Hank to the nearest gate, and that's it. I think.

Same for the Dimensional Shambler. Think about this: you have a monster dealing 3 Stamina damage. Hank enters combat with it, and fails the combat check. He has only 2 Stamina left, so he's driven unconscious. Do you check Horror then? Nope. Same stuff for Nightgaunts and Dimensional Shamblers: a failed check implies a certain penalty. Combat's over, no Horror Check required.

I've always read Hank ability as "if the combat goes over round 1, then..."

It's been a while since I last dusted off the old Arkham Horror box, but I thought the Horror Check was done first. Before combat begins, basically as soon as you encounter (or fail to evade) the monster, you make the Horror Check. So if Hank was in danger of going mad from the Horror Check, that should've happened long before he failed any combat checks.

Normally you'd be right; but Hank's special ability means he doesn't take a Horror check until he fails a Combat check.

Once you're flung into a gate or Time and Space, or are unconscious or insane, the battle is over. Hank doesn't move on to the horror check.

Knocked insane?

Touched in the head.

Or, perhaps, nudged in the brain.
