What can CardgameDB improve upon?

By Staton, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

hang on if you UNcheck search for full text it will find a specific string? Isn't that the wrong way round?

-Make it so I can search for Bay of Ice

-Enter in the name field executes a search

-every search i have to unclick 5 of the houses, how about just the neutral click box is clicked by default.

-a lot of people comment on cards on agotcards and no one does on cardgamedb (Even you staton, I saw you compulsively checking agotcards in your stream.) an that is because site navigation is difficult. It is hard to find things for me from the front page, I know most things are labeled but it is hard for me and probably is for others, too jumbled!

-all these sites split the audience uselessly, why can't we have

the search engine from

http://info.wsisiz.edu.pl/~szczesnj/

the deck builder from cgdb

the ease of commenting from agotcards

the articles from the team coventant site

the forum from ffg

the chat room from skype

and the online play from OCTGN

all in one place

it's stupid.

That was some pretty great free-form poetry there. Really brought your entire post together. Although you do bring up a good question: why don't all of these entirely different sites all combine into one. It's just rude that they don't.

the articles from the team coventant site

You spelled "Small Council" wrong. ;)

the forum from ffg

If I had to have forums, I would NOT want this one, heh- no Private Message feature? Weird quoting system? pop-up window to paste text? What's wrong with a good ol' PhpBB?

Sigh..case in point. Thanks, FFG message boards for making my point for me. gui%C3%B1o.gif

I didn't meant to discount the small council articles, I just wanted to call out the best features of each. Team Covenant is having article writing contests with prizes, and I think that is significant.

I would like to see an easy way to access each of the article types per game. For example, as a fairly new GoT: LCG player, I am enjoying The First Tilt articles. It would be nice to be able to click on the GoT subsection, then click on a tab for "Articles", then click on the article type, which in this case would be "The First Tilt". Once doing so, there would then be a list of all articles in that series, so I could read each article in the series.

~Soo.... you actually want the prizes?

I believe article tagging is in the works over there, so you should be able to do this in the near future :)

Want the prizes? Well no.

I was just about to type this, but found someone already got there. I too would like to see the articles together. Clicking on the latest 2 chumps, on the home page, should bring me to a page where the links are found for all of them.

I always wondered why that if I submit a deck it has to be reviewed first before it's posted. I often create a deck that I want somebody else to look at. I know I can use the save as text feature and what not, but it is much prettier and easier to decipher if the deck can be viewed right from the site quickly. It isn't a big deal, but for me it would be an improvement.

I've been submitting a few comments and suggestions on the forum on cardgamedb.com lately. As I said there, I think the deck management available on your site works better than any other available tool at the moment. While the search doesn't always work exactly as expected, I was able to work around that without hardly any issue. I haven't run into any weird unexplained bugs, which is something I can't claim for some other community sites. And your site has a ton of functionality not found other places... at the same time this can be a drawback. Many people only have a few types of interactions they are wanting to make with a site, and at some point the additional things they aren't interested in become clutter on the page, and at the worst will stop them from being able to easily find the three or four things they are looking to do on the site. The first thing that comes to mind are the amount of links on the left when the page fist loads (I have it set to automatically take me to the GoT section if I remember correctly, which is an awesome feature). I don't remember what all the options are, but I know I haven't actually clicked on half of the buttons there. But the links on the left do look nice.. in fact the whole website looks fairly clean. I always like the option of more themes though, but I'm always unhappy with 99% of the options so I'm not sure that's the best area to spend time on.

By far, the best feature of the cardgamedb website (aside from deck manager) is the articles. By in large they are well-written and timely. This is content that over time will ensure your website will be relevant to the GoT community. Thanks for the work!

We are definitely adding more tagging features in the next month or so. You'll be able to see all articles in a given category, be it Author, Column, or type of Article, etc.

The interface is definitely a bit....cluttered at times. I'm going to be looking into what other options we have available in that area. My dream solution would be a fully customizable UI, but there are obvious problems there, not to mention the amount of work I'm guessing it would take. I'm hoping we'll be able to come up with a nice middle ground.

Also, several people have been upset over the recent push to get CGDB a bit more user interaction. They feel that we are trying to split the demographics with other sites, and I just want to say that, again, we aren't trying to do this. Each site performs its own functions, but there is always going to be some overlapping involved. I mean we are all working on a supplemental site to the same product, its just bound to happen. However, I feel it best to continue this discussion over at CGDB itself. So if you guys wouldn't mind, feel free to pop over to CGDB and under the News for the Site sub forum you can find Suggestions for the Site post. Feel free to post (and repost the stuff you have here) over there so we can get everything all in one place. Thanks.

I couldn't use the card search for the longest time, and found out it was because Firefox was auto-blocking the pop up window for me.

It also says "loading" in the deck-builder when this happens as well, and I wasn't sure what was going on.

Maybe a short message that states that the browser might be blocking the pop-up window?

I don't know if this is already functional, but perhaps a way to export your decklist into OCTGN?

Yup, Rave, that is indeed functional. It's from the dropdown menu on the lower left of the deckbuilder.

Awesome. Thanks for the heads up, Kennon.

The weird frames should be gotten rid off.

Sometimes there seems to be a compatibility problem with Chrome.

Searches will return empty results when it seems like they shouldn't, and you just get that weird frame bar cutting across the middle of the window.

Fewer articles by people who I'm pretty sure don't know what they're talking about.<----dicky comment but true

Good things: I love the card images, and I love how they pop up when you mouse over the name. (When you go to the card page, though, your search results are gone when you come back.)

tw2dn has written some great stuff.

It's clear that much effort has been spent, and its free, so complaints don't carry much weight, IMO.

There is no one on the Small Council who doesn't know what they are talking about.

(Sorry man. That one was just too easy.)

haha Man, that is soooooo true! I figure that if I answer enough questions though that I'll eventually get SOME of them right.

its not exactly like there are a ton of articles about Agot to choose from, ill read one written by anyone and judge for myself if it seems credible. Plus, even inexperienced players can have a way of looking at things that i might be unfamilar with and find useful

I guess the only counter to that is to have you write something for us!

Until then .

~But Jack doesn't want articles written by people who don't know what they're talking about.
