What can CardgameDB improve upon?

By Staton, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Pretty much the title. What changes/improvements would you like to see?

Is that the site I have to create an account to look at? If so - I'd go if they changed that. But I'm nto creating any more onlien accounts and passwords for games and hobbies.

Nope. You don't need an account.

I think CardgameDB needs to require users to log in in order to use the site.

I see what you did ^there^.

I would really appreciate improved search functionality. For example, there have been a number of instances where I have searched for parts of a card text or title with no results returned. That said, I still frequent the site daily for deckbuilding and articles, plus the podcast, so there is certainly plenty of excellent content.

Search functionality working on every word in the title and card text.

To be able to search an entire cycle by one click rather than six.

As I mentioned in another post, I think the one GLARING hole that both this and agotcards.org lack is the ability to track tourney data.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, and I know it could take hours of work, but it quite frankly shocks me that these are lacking with such a huge potential payoff in terms of website traffic. A system that allowed users to input tourney results on their own and then combined those into graphs/charts - for example, of all the tourney reports submitted how is house X performing - would draw TONS of new traffic. Both of these sites already have the graphic software necessary to display the information...they use it already in deckbuilding. What they lack is a system where users can upload their data as tourney results that are tagged by date/location.

How cool would it be if you could search for a version of Eddard and then see a list of all the top 5 recent decks that played this particular version in their deck? Then you could click on the tourney results for that tourney in general, to get a better sense of the "field" in which that particular build performed well. Over time, you could also track what metas tend to play which houses, etc. All of these results could then be sorted by timeframe, so that you could sort out particular periods of time - for example, pre- vs. post-FAQ. As an end user, I could visit the site, see a list of the tourney results from November to February, or the last 3 months, or whatever. If one of those participants uploaded a deck list, I could then click on that deck list to see what it is...combining the deck list AND the overall tourney results would give me a much better sense of how or why a particular deck performed well.

Optionally, to ensure accuracy, tourney data could be regulated by a peer review system, whereby someone can "add tourney results," and then those must be "confirmed" by 3-5 other users before the results were actually integrated into the other results. Like Wikipedia, uploaded content that was incorrect could be flagged by users, so that the website owner had to do virtually nothing to regulate or update the system.

I'm not saying this would be easy, though I suspect the most difficult requirements to get such a system off the ground are already pretty much incorporated in various other aspects of CardGameDB. Ultimately though, a site that did this well could easily increase it's visitors by magnitudes and would no doubt become the default site of choice for competitive players. (As we know, competitive players tend to be "first movers" when it comes to this type of thing, so they would probably be followed by a whole series of more casual players looking for deck lists, etc.)

I wanna see all the old ccg cards. Oh and maybe when you're searching for a card, it tells you what chapter pack its in (instead of just the first letters of the title of the chapter pack, and having to reference the spoiler section to figure it out.)

Otherwise a pretty solid site. I use it pretty much all the time.

Example: I'm looking for Inn of the Kneeling Man. I search INN, nothing comes back.

Mainly the reason that I don't use the site is because it is MINIMUM four clicks before I can find a card (shortcut to site -> deck builder -> highlight search field -> CLICK search). agotcards.org is two because search is directly on the home page. This may sound ridiculous, but it makes huge difference when I look up 100 cards a day, especially when the load time is several seconds between page loads because the site is so beefy. agotcards.org search is on the home page and its fast AND includes a card preview. And not having [ENTER] work on the deck builder card search is a huge faux paux. Don't make me actually CLICK search. My time is valuable. I have teen porn to watch and can't waste my precious free time moving my hand 6'' back to the mouse (kinda kidding, but it really is annoying).

Loving the feedback guys. I'll pass anything from here onto Darksbane and see what he can do. It ultimately is his decision how things work, but I can see a majority of this stuff being fixed rather easily. Also I want to point out that I'm not trying to "one up" or "beat" agotcards.org. I love that site and use it daily. I don't see a reason that both sites can't be used in tandem. I think that Agotcards is more about community and sharing and whatnot. I think that CardgameDB is a bit more geared towards a competitive sides of AGoT. I think the site functions pretty well as a competitive hub and such, but I do feel like there are some usability functions that could be improved that would go a long way in getting more people interested in the site. ~Although I don't understand why my Forgotten Plans article, which appears every Monday at Midnight!, isn't enough to entice the entire AGoT community. :P

I have to go with dennis on enter not working with the card search on the deck builder. I won't lie, I still use that deck builder more than the one on agotcards but if that could be fixed that would be amazing. Also a feature I would like to see on the deck builder is something that I remember from the CCG days, there was a website, i think it was the tzumain site that had a feature that you could type in how many times you wanted to draw a setup hand and it would tell you how many cards you were able to set up how many times.

That last part is confusing even for me, so I will try to explain. You would build a deck, then type in that you wanted to draw setup 100 times. The feature would then come back and tell you something like 1 time you had a 7 card setup, 7 times you had a 6 card set up, 22 times a 5 card, 30 times a 4 card and so forth. I know there is probably an equation that I could use to figure this out, but I am lazy and want a program to give me a rough idea of what I should expect from a mathmatical standpoint.

Wow, that feature sounds fantastic!

@DcDennis- I know what you mean about the three letter searches. I don't know how many times I've gone crazy trying to search for Val or the like. Darksbane has recently mentioned that it has to do with the search engine itself. Apparently full text searching doesn't allow searching for something three characters or less. He's said that he would be looking at changing some of how the engine works. And personally, I think that would be a boon.

I don't know if it's enough to make a difference for you, but you might be able to search with less clicks. There's a search button underneath the deckbuilder bar at the top of the page. When you click it, a box drops down to have you choose which game and then search.

I think the level of tournament tracking required for that would be immense, yet incredibly valuable. But that would have to be done at the level of FFG. I personally hope for a system like MTG has for their online player rankings some day. But punching in decklists for every tournament is a lot of leg work.

While we're on that subject, all this use of OCTGN can't go unnoticed. Why not have an official FFG version of AGoT (or the other LCGs) for online? I understand WoTC probably have more resources but, it would totally be a "cater to the players" kind of move.

But that's another subject. CARRY ON.

I would absolutely love that feature, though if something like that were implemented, it would be nice to be able to flag certainly cards as undesirable for set-up. If I draw a Newly Made Lord and The Iron Cliffs in my set-up hand, those cards are staying put. Still, would be an awesome feature. I definitely compulsively check my set-up with new decks, either in the deckbuilders or by hand, and it would be nice to have a little math to see how smoothly things should run.

Perhaps I'm mistaken about this, but I'd like to see the search function find "House-specific" events better. One feature that I really like on AGoTCards and the wsisiz site is the "treat events as if they had House affiliation" feature... for example, searching for Stark events will return Winter is Coming on those sites but not on CardGameDB; its not a House Stark only event, but its useless to non-Stark decks. Same for A Lannister Pays his debts, etc, you get the idea.

Overall I think I like the look and functionality of AGoTCards a bit better. It just seems cleaner to me, and I like the deckbuilder *slightly* better as a result. Conversely, one thing I really like about CardGameDB over AGoTCards is that when searching for cards on CGDB I can check the boxes for Lannister and Targ Events and get all the Events for both Houses; on AGoT checking both boxes only searches for Events that are Targ/Lanni only (i.e. don't exist), which seems counterintuitive to me. I do use both sites regularly though, and I really appreciate the time and effort it takes you guys to keep them both running, and I hope his thread proves helpful!

I will +1 a few of the feature requests already mentioned

-search for 3 letter words like val, inn, old nan, etc

-"enter" for search in the deckbuilder

-setup hand analysis

-tournament reporting. it doesn't have to include every decklist. listing how many players with breakdown of representation by house, agenda, and restricted card is minimal enough and hugely helpful.

Let's not forget that agotcards.org is evolving around AGoT. CardgameDB is for several other card games. Sure, the AGoT section can probably be enhanced a bit more, but I think the enhancements could more aimed toward the overall site.

Currently it's a busier site because it has all the other card games, so it is not AGoT centric when you go to its home page.

3 letter searches are annoying, but there needs to be some category to separate Joust and Melee submitted decks.

Also, when looking at a card you should always be able to tell at a glance if it is Restricted (search results doesn't show this).

Tournament results as articles with decklists sounds like a good idea, but otherwise I see data becoming obsolete quickly at the rate new cards are introduced and gameplay shifts.

I personally would like to see an "exclusion search" when it comes to the chapter packs. I'm fairly new to the game, and have only picked up chapter cycle packs in the 3x format. As such, I have basically everything except A Time of Ravens and A Clash of Arms (off topic, has anyone heard any rumors of them being reprinted in the 3x format?). It would be nice to have a checkbox or something that would allow me to search on everything except those two cycles.

And I second the need to search on an entire cycle. It would be so much easier than adding 6 items to the search.

-A Joust/Melee deck section & a tournament deck section

-Way to find Targ burn cards in the deck builder (STR)

-Finishing the WH:I deck builder :)

-Possibility to group your decks in the deck builder (Stark folder, treaty folder, etc.) and different options to sort the cards in your deck? (Cost, Community Rating, STR, etc.,..)

I still think the cardgamedb deck builder is the best around. I don't know how many times the agotcards builder ate 3+ cards of my deck and I had to recheck every entry.

the ability to search for a specific string of words.

trying to build a "win when I lose " Martell deck and if you search for cards with "after you lose a challenge" it returns every card with just one of those words.

I would like to see the shadow cost counted correctly. Currently shadow cost Sx = cost x instead of cost 2+x.

Also when searching I find it easier to uncheck the "Use FullText Search" that allows for 3 letter search terms and such.
