Custom Chapter Read and Review

By Chuckachu, in Deathwatch

Okay I just flew through this in the book to get the idea on "paper". But basically I wanted to create a chapter with the flavor of a doctrine revolving around the idea of cavalry charges, using actually cavalry creatures mixed with modern armor vehicle equivalances. So please point out where I could get this idea a bit more polished if you see it.

Ceramite Tigers
Why was the chapter founded: Counter->Dark Mechanicum
37th Millennium
Progenitor-> Ultramarines
Gene-stock Purity-> A new Generation
Codex Demeanours-> Scions of Mars
Characteristic Modifiers-> Lightning cavalry raids inspire their fellows to greater deeds are the trademark of this chapter. +5 Agility & +5 Fellowship
Founding Father-> Master of the Forge -> Led a nearly fled campaign against rebel mechancium forces and quaritinted the forge world before claiming it as his chapter’s new homeworld.
Current Chapter Master ->
1st company commander -> Devastor
2nd Company commander -> Assault Marines
Homeworld->Forge world “?“-> Temperate near Ultramar except where unbroken by forge hav blocks -> Direct Rule=Chapter fulfills planets entire leadership with a very weak presence liason Magos.

Organisation: Unique Organization -> Lightning Strike combat doctrine ->No scouts & All but devastator squads mounted on Lightning Cats -> Special Mounts: Massive Cybernetic felines “Lightning Cats”
Solo Mode Abilites-> Quick reaction is the hallmark of this chapter. While in Solo Mode, the battle-brother is considered to have the Lightning Reflexes Talent. At Rank 3, the Battle-brother receives a +10 to all Dodge tests. At Rank 5, the battle-brother is considered to have the Rapid Reaction Talent. At Rank 7, once per game session the battle-brother may automatically pass any one Agility-based test.
Squad Mode Attack->Tiger’s Fury Cost: 3 Action: Full Action Sustained: Yes. While this ability is in effect, the battle-brother and those within support range of him gain the Furious assault talent and the frenzy talent. At rank 4, activiating this ability is a half-action.
Squad mode defensive-> Predator’s Advance Action: Reaction Cost: 2 Sustainted: yes. Members of this chapter have the skill and training necessary to move quickly through even the most punishing onslaughts of gunfire. While this ability is active, the battle-brother and any within support range who successfully dodge a ranged attack may spend their reaction to make a full move. At rank 4, they may also reload one weapon provided it does not take longer than a half or full action to do so.
Beliefs-> Esoteric Beliefs= Only true part of the Emperor that remains is the beacon and the Omnissiah who they believe is a symbiotic diety so their worship of the Omnissiah reveres the Emperor in due course.

Chapter Current Status: Understrength= Campaign that founded chapter and gained homeworld left available brothers that Ultramar could spare thin.
Chapter Friends: Adeptus Mechanicus, Adeptus Titanicus
Chapter Enemies: Adeptus Mechanicus, Dark Mechanicum
Custom Advances: Strength of Arms

Sure. I love the whole thing of writing up new custom Chapters to play with, and I've got more or less finished ideas for about...32 Chapters of my own at present. :D

Lets get started.

Everything here looks ok with me, although when considering the theme you've chosen for the Chapter and most importantly that since they have a Unique Organization I would probably pick the White Scars or Iron Hands as Progenitor rather than the Ultramarines. But those are just what I think since the whole cavalry tactic rings like White Scars with me and the Mechanicus connection rings like Iron Hands to me. You should of course do as you think is best. :)

The one thing that I would be critical about is however the idea that they are recruiting from a Forge World that they rule themselves. I'm sorry but I'm finding it hard to accept that a Chapter would be able to both get hold of a Forge World like that without drawing down the full wrath of the Priests of Mars and also that a Forge World which has been the domain of the Dark Mechanicus would be used as a homeworld for the Chapter. As I see it a world held by the forces of Chaos would likely be considered to potentially tainted to possibly allow their inhabitants to become Space Marines, least you end up with a Chapter that is corrupted from within.

Secondly I would like to point out that rather than saying that the Chapter takes over an entire Forge World, which I can't possibly see them as being allowed to do, it could work that since the Chapter is good friends with the Adeptus Mechanicus the Mechanicus allows the Chapter to recruit from their world and to have their fortress-monestary either on the world or close by.

The way I would do it is to say that the Chapter and Adeptus Mechanicus have for a very long time been very close to each other and that the Chapter arrives to help save the Forge World from an invasion by the Dark Mechanicus and in gratitude the Red Priesthood allows the Chapter access to recruitment and HQ on the planet.

I think its a very origional idea even if it don't really fall into my taste.

Looks good.

Seems like it would work.

Sounds good, in particular since the Chapter is supposed to be close to the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Looks good but one question. What do you mean with "Campaign that founded chapter and gained homeworld left available brothers that Ultramar could spare thin"? I'm not really sure what you are trying to say.

Okay as I take a step back I like your idea/change with the forge world. I'll change it to Distant Rule saying that they live on the Forge World's one moon to continue to counter the Dark Mechanicum that leads occasional raids against the planet in question.

As for the Lightning cats, I love the table top Thunder Wolves and wanted to flip that unit type to a more readily available unit choice at least for the RPG fluff.

All I changed where the names from the codex attack/defense section.

Basically what that last part was attempting to say despite it self was, After the Master of the Forge liberated the forge world he and what marines where left on planet/orbit where declared a seperate legion to defend against future chaos heretek incursions.

Okay some modifications here and there to hopefully bring it a step closer to my vision. Still working out a change to the Squad mode attack to be less beserker charge and more one man cat like pounce and rend.

Ceramite Tigers
Why was the chapter founded: Counter->Dark Mechanicum
37th Millennium
Progenitor-> Iron Hands
Gene-stock Purity-> A new Generation
Codex Demeanours-> Scions of Mars
Characteristic Modifiers-> Lightning cavalry raids require great agility and universal MIU cybernetic are the hallmarks of the Ceramite Tigers. +5 Agility & +5 Toughness
Founding Father-> Master of the Forge “Arnkel”-> Recovered a nearly flailed campaign against rebel mechancium forces and quarantined the forge world before it being declared as his chapter’s new homeworld.
Current Chapter Master ->
1st company commander -> Devastor marine named Hergan
2nd Company commander -> Assault Marine named Siestion
Homeworld->Forge world Sani Primarius-> Temperate near Ultramar except where unbroken by forge hab blocks -> Diistant Rule=Chapter recruits from pool of worthy adepts & normal denizens with the collaboration of the chapters current Master of Recruiting and a Magos of the forge. Otherwise the chapter owns/lives on the forges one orbiting moon, Sani II, which is composed of a nearly impenetrable jungle in which the lightning cats are the primary predator.

Organisation: Unique Organization -> Lightning Strike combat doctrine ->No scouts & All but devastator squads mounted on Lightning Cats -> Special Mounts: Massive Cybernetic felines “Lightning Cats”
Solo Mode Abilities-> Quick reaction is the hallmark of this chapter. While in Solo Mode, the battle-brother is considered to have the Lightning Reflexes Talent. While this ability is in effect, the battle-brother and those within support range of him gain the Furious assault talent and only the Ceramite Tiger benefits from the Thunder Charge talent. At rank 4, activating this ability is a half-action.
Squad mode defensive-> Predator’s Advance Action: Reaction Cost: 2 Sustained: yes. Members of this chapter have the skill and training necessary to move quickly through even the most punishing onslaughts of gunfire. Chapter Friends: Adeptus Mechanicus, Adeptus Titanicus
Chapter Enemies: Adeptus Mechanicus, Dark Mechanicum
Custom Advances: Strength of Arms

Ceramite Tigers Primarch’s Curse: Beastial Code The Ceramite Tigers primarch Arnkel and all that have followed over time reach a near perfect symbiotic relationship with their bonded companion, be it lightning cat, vehicle, weapon, or servo familiar. Unfortunately this often leads the marine to sequester themselves from others not understanding the connections forged in bonded machine spirit. Level 1: The marine suffers a -10 on all social interactions with non Cermaite Tigers or Adeptus Mechanicus forces. Level 2: The line between the marine’s mind and the machine spirit of his companion begin to leak into the other, the marine suffers -20 to all social interactions with all but Ceramite Tigers or forces capable of Binary Chatter. We call this the White Scars lament, oh how they would love cybernetic riding animals, fast rhinos and predators, storm raven gunships. Got lumbered with the standard codex though, poor schmucks.

Hell I'm sure Orks would like their cybernetic riding animals back.

That's not to say I insist you should change it to be WS successor mind, it's up to you and as Gurkhal said the Iron Hands are both Mechanicus aligned and tribal in nature. Sometimes some obvious links aren't nesesarily the right choices and it's better to have something that falls farther from the original and crosses a couple of boundaries.

Looks very good but I think you've made a small miss which I have highlighted above. The Chapter can't have its own Primarch, mostly due to its Primarch being Ferrus Manus. I would change that to Chapter's first Chapter Master or something like that. Otherwise its a thing that can make you look bad I'm afraid.

I really love this Chapter, especially the idea of the cats. Similar to Thunderwolves.

I currenlty have a Dev with a wolf, that will eventually become his mount. The plan is to allow him the mount with a HBolter. I could totally see a similar setup for your TWC, HBolter weilding Devs mounted on massive lightning cats. Throw a power-lance on there for good measure?

I have an AD-Mech backed chapter I call the Dark Skulls for use in my campaign. They follow an Iron Father similar to the IHands. Their basic tacticals use GK style teleporter packs and upgraded 'Scelus' Bolters. Squad Sargeants can take Chain Fists.

They use a modified Storm Raven variant called a 'Punisher' that wields a massive Hellhammer cannon. Seen here:

Their colors are ceramite grey, Mechanicum red pauldrons and a Black helm.

Okidus - Really glad you liked it. The idea has been bouncing in my noggin for quite awhile. Really liked your mini there as well. I tried to mock up a Tcat out of the 2nd Transformers movie Ravage model but he was to big for a marine to sit on, and all said he was big as a landraider. Found a awesome alternative that was the same toy but the size of the new Twolves from GW. I'm in the process of turning the three of them into "Twolves" for Iron Priests.
