Dice evaluation app 'WHFRP Dice' for iPhone/iPad

By Enslaver of Wrath, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi guys

In our group some of us (not mentioning any names here...) spend a lot of time creating and evaluating the dice pool. As the night progresses it gets even more difficult. Therefore, as a personal challenge, I tried to make iPhone/iPad app that simplies the combat sequence, thereby giving us more time to the actual roleplay (and more fights, xp, Gold, TREASURE! he he).

I've made 8 presets possibilities so you don't have to configure your dice pool every time, and I've also included history function.

I would appreciate any and all feedback and suggestions.

Best regards, Johan

Looks nice.

But prepare to be sued.

You are asking money from an app that uses lisences by Games Workshop and FFG. In the top of that FFG even has it's own dice app.

I doubt they'd go straight for suing. More like a request to pull the app and stop distributing it, then followed by legal action if he doesn't comply. But yeah, FFG already has an app in the marketplace for managing dice pools, and you're using license material.

Looks good, we played around with it for a bit and had some thoughts:

  • The preset buttons are reset when restarting the app, it would be cool if the app saved the preset dice pools.
  • It felt natural to try to draw the "slider" that indicates your stance, but it wasn't possible. It's easy enough to klick, but it just feels right to slide the stance.
  • In the iPad version of the app got strange white "borders" on the top and bottom of the screen and it overlaps the preset buttons.
  • The reset button could reset the roll window (i.e. remove the current roll as well as the history).
  • You could add a roll sound effect, but in that case also add a button to disable it. ;)
  • As a "combat aid" the app could be used to track stress, fatigue and normal wounds (if this could be implemented, it would sure be nice if the app saved current stess, fatigue and wounds when the app was closed as you could use it to keep track between sessions).
  • We've only made a few rolls so far, but it felt like the rolls had a very hight success rate. Maybe it was just a feeling (or lucky rolls) though.
  • Lastly, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is generally shortened WFRP. ;)

Hope FFG/GW doesn't force you to remove the app, it seems to be a cool and well working app.

I think the biggest issue is that it rolls the wrong dice for Reckless and Conservative.

Rolling a pool of just a single Conservative die can net a result of double successes, or double boons, or a bane: Reckless results in other words.
As for features that would be nice, the ability to see how each die contributed to the result would be excellent, allowing the die types to color the fiction. For example, knowing that the skill die contributed two successes while a Reckless die added a bane might tell us something about how the action plays out in-game.
I like the effort, though, and I'm glad you have started this thread for feedback.
Cheers and best luck.

Absolutely the biggest issue now that you pointed it out. As I interpreted it the delay and exertion symbols were reversed and that that issue had been corrected. But now that I made a couple of rolls with only one reckless/conservative die I noticed that the die results are also inversed. That's a serious issue and must be fixed for this app to be really useful.

Also, I agree that it would be fun to be able to see how the dice contributed to the result, perhaps by pressing an "expand" button or something.

Hi guys

Thanks for all the feedback - I'm working on it now, probably uploading later today. After sifting through the clammy hands of iOS reviewers, it will hit you in a week or so...

@Matthew SB: Again, thanks for pointing the inversion out - this time I found the real error, and got it right.

I've made it possible to 'Show detailed output'

- The preset buttons are reset when restarting the app, it would be cool if the app saved the preset dice pools.
True, I've changed that

- It felt natural to try to draw the "slider" that indicates your stance, but it wasn't possible. It's easy enough to klick, but it just feels right to slide the stance.
Maybe in the future

- In the iPad version of the app got strange white "borders" on the top and bottom of the screen and it overlaps the preset buttons.
Ok, got to get me one of those too...

- The reset button could reset the roll window (i.e. remove the current roll as well as the history).

Yeah, that would be nice, but that's a whole different story

probably just luck

- Lastly, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is generally shortened WFRP. ;)
I know, but WFRP was kinda, sorta taken...

Best regards,

Johan

Looking forward to it, as a GM I feel that the presets could be useful as different creature attack pools, making combat faster. I'll definitly try to use it in my regular gaming sessions (even though I love rolling real dice). Keep up the good work! :)

Just got the update, seems to work great!

We used the app for a bit yesterday and were happy with how it worked.

Hi again

As k7e9 pointed out the app is updated in working order.

Unfortunately, FFG does not like its presence (due to several intellectual property violations), so, as of yesterday, the app has been removed from iTunes. I hope some of you still can enjoy it, but there will be no further updates. If you have any ideas/suggestions to some other helpful app (that does not contain direct references to any particular system), I will consider creating it.

Game on!

Johan

an app that picks 3 random careers. with filters so you can isolate the 3 careers to basic ones only for example. and/or ones relevant to a race only.

@New Zombie:

Good idea, but that would be a violation of their intellectual properties as well... No direct references to game.

You could to a general tracking app. An app where anyone could enter lables on what should be tracked and a box with a + and - to increase/decrease the numbers or just insert the number. That kind of app could be used to track wounds, stress, fatigue, power, favour, fortune, corruption, money, etc.

But it would not violate FFG's interlectual property as what to track is up to the user. It could be useful for other RPGs as well as other kind of games. An important feature would of course be that the app saves all the tracked data between gaming sessions, even if the app is closed in the multi-task field of the iPhone/iPad.

In my group I'm guessing we would mainly use such an app to track tokens between sessions, during the sessions we would probably use the tokens.

Other features could include the possibility to have different "campaigns" tracked, so you can lable the games you're playing in and use the app to track multiple different games. A notebox where characters could imput prudent information that cannot be tracked by a simple numerical value (such as card inventory, names of contacts etc.)

oh yes indeed, they would. i've been searching for one for ages it feels ;-)

yep. there is brilliant descent dice roller. i think I should check how to make WFRP dice roller from it...

actually, an android app does exist.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.WFRPDice

I never downloaded it, however, as it costs 2 EUR, offers no free demo or trial, doesn't seem too advanced and violates my "Before i pay for a mobile app, i don't use it" policy.
