Do unnopposed challenges still compare attackers str value towards the defender, I.e. could I tap aero hotah in response to losing a challenge by 4 or more str if the challenge is unnopposed. I think you can as the only rules I can find say unnopposed gives the benefit of power gain, but a friend of mine is making the argument that unnopposed challenges fall under a separate category and don't compare str value, just defended challenges do

Yep, you sure can. STR is still counted even if a challenge is unopposed, so all manner of reacts can be triggered.
