Winning on Defense?

By lahomen, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Here's the scenario, involving The Only Game That Matters (Any phase: until the end of the challenge, participating characters do not count their STR.)

1) opponent attacks with a Carrion Bird (MIL, str 1). I play The Only Game That Matters, and declare no defenders. Have I won on defense?

2) opponent attacks with a Carrion Bird (MIL, str 1), I defend with a Carrion Bird (MIL, str 1). I play The Only Game That Matters. Have I won on defense?

When you are determining challenge winner either the attacker or defender must have at least 1 str. If they do not then there is no winner.

You don't win on defense just because your opponent does not win on attack. A challenge can have no winner at all, assuming neither attacker nor defender can meet the "at least 1 participating character and a total challenge STR of 1 or greater" criteria.

Thanks ktom!

Another question on this example. Is there still an opportunity to declare defenders if the attacker has no strength in the challenge? Or does the challenge automatically end when there is no strength?

I believe if the only attacking character is bounced before defenders are declared the challenge ends, but if they are bounced after defenders are declared does the defender then win the challenge, or does it just end?

Excellent, that was my thought just wanted confirmation. Thanks as always Ktom :)

I has an additional question regarding events that give automatic wins.

Say I used Osha and removed her from the challenge after defense declaration. The defender would win the challenge since I had no characters. Would I be still able to use Feigned Retreat to win the challenge?

Whenever the text on a card and the basic rules of the game directly contradict, you follow the card. Feigned Retreat effectively replaces all normal criteria from the rules for winning a challenge with its own text - automatically making you the winner with no other requirements beyond playing the card. So when you play the event, you don't have to worry about the normal rules for winning a challenge (participating character, total STR above 0, etc.). You just have to worry about the text on the event.
