Few newbie questions about rules

By Spydre, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I play LCGs with a partner (mostly LOTR) and recently we decided to give GoT a try. I think we've got most of the basics of the core set down, but there were a few specific cases where we weren't 100% what to do. If these questions are covered in the FAQ or another thread, my apologies in advance. Anyway, here they are:

1) Save vs Cancel - If I win a military challenge and the other player has say Arya Stark with Numeria on her and Robb Stark, I get that Numeria can be used to "save" Arya Stark from being killed, but does that mean that the player still has to choose someone else to be killed (Robb Stark in this example)? I get that Cancel means that the kill effect is completely canceled, but was unsure if Save just stops one character from being killed and another has to be chosen.

2) Deadly - On a similar note, can an attachment like Numeria be used to stop a Deadly effect or does it only stop that person from being killed and another must be chosen? Also, let's say I win a military challenge and have the most Deadly characters. Does that mean the other player must kill multiple players (X number for the military challenge plus one more for the Deadly effect)?

3) Valor Morghulis - Can an attachment like Numeria be used to save a character from being killed by this plot card or does the card kill everyone?

4) Robb Stark's card effect - Robb Stark's card effect states "After you win a (military) challenge in which Robb Stark participates, choose and kill a character controlled by the losing player." Assuming I win the military challenge and have a claim value of 2, does that mean I can choose a player to kill and then the other player must also kill 2 more or do I just choose one player to kill and the other player chooses a 2nd to meet the claim value?

5) Dominance phase order of effects - We had a scenario where I was playing Stark and the other person was playing Targaryan. The Targaryan player wanted to use Viserion (Dominance: Pay 4 gold to choose and kill a kneeling character) and I wanted to use Guilty! (Dominance: Kneel 3 influence or kneel a (ring) character to choose and kill a non-(stark) character) to kill Viserion before his effect could be used. In a case like this, how do we determine the order of which goes first?

6) Kneeling influence as an attachment - This is a stupid question, but if I attach a card such as Lord Eddard's Chambers (+1 gold, +1 influence) to the house card, I can still kneel that attachment for influence, right?

Saving does not re-direct the need to kill the character. Were that the case, Saving during Military claim would be a useless gesture (as you'd choose one character to die, then Save them, and have to choose another). The way the timing actually works, the claim is fulfilled by choosing characters to die, then they are killed, then they are saved.

Deadly (potentially) kills characters, and Saving means they don't actually die. So this resolves in exactly the same way as the above question.

3) Valor Morghulis - Can an attachment like Numeria be used to save a character from being killed by this plot card or does the card kill everyone?

Valar Morghulis kills all characters in play, but as it does not note that they "cannot be saved," any Save mechanic can prevent one of those deaths.

Robb's ability would actually take place AFTER your opponent has fulfilled the claim. In a claim 2 challenge that means that your opponent would choose two characters to die for claim, then you would choose a third (or, potentially, one of the two if it had been Saved)

The First Player (the player chosen to go first in the Plot phase) get's the first chance to activate an ability. Also note that in the Dominance phase, the counting of STR and awarding Dominance happens FIRST, immediately following the oppertunity to bring a card out of Shadows (if you've read the Shadows rules)

6) Kneeling influence as an attachment - This is a stupid question, but if I attach a card such as Lord Eddard's Chambers (+1 gold, +1 influence) to the house card, I can still kneel that attachment for influence, right?

Absolutely you can. Any card with Influence may be knelt to produce that influence.

I have utterly failed at using the Quote function, I'm afraid.

Ignore this post.

It's not you, it's the board. Some functions here never really work properly.

But you did a great job and as another newbie it's greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the reply. That cleared up a lot of arguments for us, haha. One last clarification, though: If I win a military challenge with a claim of 1 and I have the most Deadly characters, does the loser only have to kill1 character (for the claim value) or do they have to kill 1 for the claim value and 1 for the Deadly effect?

They have to kill 1 character for claim and 1 participating character for Deadly. Usually if they only defended with one character, they'll kill it for claim and then have no one left to choose for Deadly.

Keep in mind that if an effect specifies the characteristics of the card it kills - and there are no cards that meet those specifications - nothing dies. You don't get to choose "the closest to meeting the specifications." So, since Deadly specifies that it only kills characters participating on the defending side of a challenge, if there are no (live) defenders, Deadly doesn't kill anything - by moving on to non-defending characters of some kind. And the defender is in no way obligated to make sure your Deadly has someone to kill. One of the best ways to avoid Deadly is to either not declare defenders, or to kill all of your defenders (say for military claim) before Deadly resolves.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification.
