AGOT_LCG online play via web (again)

By Adun2, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

It is standard to lay your set up out like that. Some people have be gun laying all their cards out in a straight line so your opponent doesn't know what you have, but the majority of players just play their characters top, locations bot, shadows to the side during set up.

It being the 'usual' way of doing things is fine, as long as it's not REQUIRED.

I'm a believer in never giving my opponent free information. So I always either put mine in a straight line or purposely put them in weird spots to give them free but incorrect information.

I'll be going away for an easter vacation. When I return on monday, I'll be looking to add more features. I'm still deciding which to prioritize. Options are the melee (actions and effects for titles) or the login infrastructure (including a database) required to eventually add a deckbuilder. Or perhaps I should focus on something else, if you have any suggestions.

About the setup, I believe it is meant to be a blind bet, demanding a flexible strategy to whatever your opponents may play, so having the app not say anything about the setup of others (not even the quantity of cards) seems better for me.

Hi, a potential new player here. I have been interested in the game for awhile. I have read the rules and othere information about this game. I think playing online would be a great opportunity for me to see if I like it. I first tried to play the dummy and realized its just a sandbox :) Are players on there willing to help someone new?

Last night I started thinking about just how functional a card game could be in a browser, and I couldn't think of any functionality that OCTGN (or any other card management for that matter) has that couldn't be available from a web-based app. Since I'm most familiar with the UI components, I put together this very basic webpage that allows for random hand draw, moving the cards around the board, double-clicking the cards to flip, and automatic resizing of the UI elements for different browser sizes (it looks fine on my Samsung Vibrant, but the card movement doesn't work from my phone with this initial version). Here is a screencast I just took of the webpage, which is nothing but HTML, CSS3, and Javascript (Dojo 1.7 and native):

Obviously this web demo which was put together in a few hours doesn't have anywhere near the functionality of the browser-based game that is being developed here, but it does show a close resemblance to the realistic functionality we currently get from OCTGN. Something I had in was a hover affect that magnified whatever card you moused over, but I took it out since it makes the card flipping and dragging not look as nice in its current state.

I don't know if I'll have time to attempt to make this UI actually be functional, but I've been looking into cometD for the server side of this just to ensure this technology can handle the functionality required and it looks like it can easily do so. I also took a brief look at the server being used for this app (Vaadin), and it is very similar to the cometd server I've been looking at. The difference I see is that Vaadin focuses more exclusively on Java for the components (as opposed to allowing for clients written in any language), but I may be mistaken about this. If Vaadin does allow for an easy connection between Javascript objects and the server-side Java objects, then I would be happy to either hand over the UI stuff I've come up with so far or we can just discuss application development here.

We need a good web-based method for playing this game, and your version is currently the best (only?) we have. I hope I'm able to help in some way to ensure this version has all the functionality it needs to be an adequate replacement for OCTGN or any other program. Please continue to post details on your application's development! Any thoughts around creating a github project?

A github project would be fantastic.

not anything to do with program but why are people playing cards into shadows during setup? my understanding, that isnt allowed anyway.

keep up the good work too!

Nope, playing cards into Shadows on Setup is indeed allowed.

Hello guys, I'm back.

This week I'm going to try to flesh out a deckbuilder functionality, so that people can build their own decks to try on 1v1.

Then I'll add cards up to the "Queen of Dragons" and "Oldtown" expansions.

Stay tuned

Hello

I tried loading the page http://aws.atehortua.com/thrones/ but it gives some message about failing to load the widgetset.

Am I doing something wrong?

Mohit

Yeah its been down for about a week now or something, cant load the page get the widget error.

Note: Adun hasn't posted here since April 9.

Yeah, can't open either, and thats really sucks 'cause I was looking for something like this and when I find it…not working, I hope he can put this working soon D:

Makes me wonder if he got a C&D. I did suggest he contact FFG directly about hit project and he seemed to blow it off. This is pure speculation of course. He could just be on vacation and have taken it down while he was messing with the backend.

Many wondered about the legality of this and he may have received an email as FFG's first salvo.
