At first I thought this quest was going to be very difficult given the cards revealed in the previews, but I've now played Road to Rivendell solo several times and have won each game. The only other adventure pack I have a perfect 100% win rate against is Hills of Emyn Muil. I thought the key was the heroes I picked (Denethor, Elrohir and Elladan), but then seeing the heroes and scores SiCK_Boy posted I guess not (however, I did play with just a single core set). Denethor is really key as he can help you dodge some of the nasty cards and the twins are very effective with their ability to ready after attack and defense (plus the stats boost they get playing together). I also loaded up my deck with all of the encounter and shadow effect nullifiers. Unlike the Hills of Emyn Muil though I found this quest challenging and very enjoyable. It's probably the quest where I had to constantly make the most tactical decisions - deciding when to engage an enemy and which characters to quest with versus hold back for combat in the event of an ambush makes for many tough decisions.

Below is the deck I used. The major weakness is poor card draw - if I were to play again I would replace Out of the Wild with some Ancient Mathom.

Just realized I have been scoring incorrectly. I've been tallying a round at the start of each round as opposed to at the end during the refresh phase so all of my scores to date have been 10 points too high since they all have 1 extra round counted. If it's ok, I'd like to resubmit my scores making this correction. New scores would be 201, 153, 144.

The first two games were both pretty close to winning but both(!) times my useless sleeping sentries got Arwen killed sad.gif In the last game I did everything I could to avoid combat (Gandalf made some pretty Sneaky attacks) and finally succeeded! happy.gif

I use 1 Core Set and all available packs up to Watcher in the Water.

I've been wanting to really use Elrohir and Elladan and was going through the Dwarrodelf cycle so far and felt like my first score on this was pretty good so I gave it a couple more plays. I was surprised how close my scores were. It felt like a very reliable deck but not the quickest ever.

I did not use any Lore cards and just tried to keep the cost of the cards in my deck very low.

Wrong. It's more like this: how is it possible to have two lucky games in a row and only one normal? lengua.gif

2 Core Sets, all expansions including The Hobbit.

In the first two games there was no sign of Gandalf whatsoever. In game 2 everything went fine until I came to the goblin gate and suddenly had to face three enemies at once, with two of them ambushing me before the combat phase. Five attacks meant five shadow cards. My Longberad Elder had forwarned me of the attack, so I didn't quest with Arwen in case I would get Sleeping Sentry as a shadow card. But instead two of the five shadow cards were Pathless Country which meant two damage on Arwen!

In game 3 I got Sleeping Sentry as an encounter card twice in a row, but that was no problem since I got forwarned by a Longberad Elder and Gandalf showed up just in time to lower my threat so that I didn't have to face more than one undefended attack, which I luckily survived.

There is a lot of luck in this quest, but I really like it because you never feel totally safe. I also somehow like the brutality of Sleeping Sentry and that you always have to plan around this card.

To my mind, Road to Rivendell is the poster child for a secrecy scenario. I think they designed this one specifically to work well with secrecy, seeing as all the enemies(besides Goblin Spearman) are over 20 threat. With that in mind, I'm always trying RtR to test secrecy decks.

I decided, for this endeavor, to go with Eowyn and Glorfindel (Spirit). Start with 14 threat and just try to run your ass off to the finish line. Old Gandalf is in there to try and eliminate some enemies building up in the staging area. Light of Valinor, Resourceful, and A Test of Will were obviously my must have cards for my starting hand. I'm very proud that these were my actual first three games (I tried a fourth to see if I could get better but I lost to an early Goblin Spearman). Here's how it went:

Game 1 Result: 69
Final Threat Level: 19
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 0
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 5

Game 2 Result: 73

Game 3 Result: 51
Final Threat Level: 21
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 0
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 3

Total: 64.33

Tried this again with a slightly modified deck.

In game 2 Gandalf came by 5 times! Even the Goblin Spearmen wouldn't engage me in the last round.
