Road to Rivendell (Solo Player Living Tournament)

By juicebox, in Player community

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking !

Scenario: Road to Rivendell
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success .

I got this quest yesterday. After taking a quick look at it, I decided I wanted to play Dunhere. With all the shadow effects returning enemies in the staging area and all the forced effects on enemies engaging the player, I figured my best shot was to keep low threat and attack from afar. I toyed with the idea of using Denethor instead of Eleanor, but the mono-sphere heroes allowed me to keep a more focused deck.

I'll probably remove the Steward of Gondor and add either Stand of Fight, the 3rd The Galadhrim's Greetings, the 3rd Shadow of the Past or additional allies (although I may be mis-evaluating its use because of Arwen's resource boost in this scenario). The rest of the deck works well. Even the Rider of the Mark, although not the best bang for your buck, does the job. I prefer his 2 Willpower over Lorien Guide's 1 point.

The only thing missing from this deck is a way to make Dunhere a dwarf! Dunhere with double Dwarrowdelf Axe! That would be a beast.

Getting your Song of King is key. The first game I played (not included above) had me stuck with a bunch of Dunedain attachment and no possibility of playing them... and Dunhere really needs those Dunedain Mark to be effective.

Gandalf can be used for all 3 options, depending on the timing. Against this scenario, I often used him for threat management, but I also drew a couple time. In 4 games, I didn't draw a single Ancient Mathom!

As for the scenario, if they call if a difficulty 4, then The Hunt for Gollum should be difficulty 1! Ambush isn't so bad if you can stay under the radar, but there are some evil Treacheries and Shadow cards in there. I was saved from defeat twice by Hasty Stroke when getting the shadow effect that discards all exhausted allies (I quested with Arwen every round).

At first I thought this quest was going to be very difficult given the cards revealed in the previews, but I've now played Road to Rivendell solo several times and have won each game. The only other adventure pack I have a perfect 100% win rate against is Hills of Emyn Muil. I thought the key was the heroes I picked (Denethor, Elrohir and Elladan), but then seeing the heroes and scores SiCK_Boy posted I guess not (however, I did play with just a single core set). Denethor is really key as he can help you dodge some of the nasty cards and the twins are very effective with their ability to ready after attack and defense (plus the stats boost they get playing together). I also loaded up my deck with all of the encounter and shadow effect nullifiers. Unlike the Hills of Emyn Muil though I found this quest challenging and very enjoyable. It's probably the quest where I had to constantly make the most tactical decisions - deciding when to engage an enemy and which characters to quest with versus hold back for combat in the event of an ambush makes for many tough decisions.

Below is the deck I used. The major weakness is poor card draw - if I were to play again I would replace Out of the Wild with some Ancient Mathom.

I liked the idea of SiCK_Boy using Dúnhere, and made something alike, but changing Aragorn for Eowyn, trying to make easier using the Leadership cards, instead of using songs. I use 3 Cores, and all APs. I made a deck mainly of Spirit, adding some Leadership like Faramir, Sneak Attack, Steward of Gondor, Celebrian’s Stone and Dúnedain Mark. Oddly, the one that I used least was Dúnhere, and almost nothing to attack the staging area. Apart of this, the deck functioned very well.
About the three games: A bad initial hand forced me to mulligan, and this led me to improve my game. An early Celebrian’s Stone made me build easy since the start, and Eleanor with UC kept me safe from treacheries. I managed to mass a bunch of allies that brought me to the win.
The second one was the easiest, with Steward of Gondor and 2 UC in early draws, 2 Dwarven Tomb in the starting hand, and a couple of Galadhrim’s Greetings, my threat was all but a problem.
And the last one started very well with SG and CS in my hand, but since that it developed slowly, and was feeling being over the edge all the time. I was near of losing a hero, but finally managed to keep all of them alive.

Took me a while to get into this adventure and to build a proper deck. Protector of Lórien and Burning Brand had a comeback and some of the new cards were included (Out of the Wild, Rivendell Blade, Good Meal). So far I've been achieving good results. In the second game, however, I got Sleeping Sentry as the first shadow card in round 1 and the game was already over. Crap!

Cards used: 1 coreset plus all expansions until RtR

Hurray. an improvement:

Heroes: Boromir, Frodo Baggins, Bilbo Baggins

I've been playing so many games, but sometimes I'm still speechless about some unlikely card combinations that I have to confront in a game. I want to add that I am mixing the cards thoroughly to avoid cards sticking together. However, in these three games the following weird things happened:

- despite having Bilbo as my card drawing machine I didn't get a single Gandalf in all three games

- in my first game the setup encounter was "Sleeping Sentry"; the turn 1 encounter was "Sleeping Sentry" again!

- in the third game the setup encounter was "Goblin Archer"; and just when I was planning how to get rid of him (with Haldir + Rivendell Blade) the turn 1 card was "Orc Ambush"!

Strategywise I try to get Burning Brand, Fast Hitch and Protector of Lórien ASAP to play them all on Bilbo. If I don't have PoL I try to play Rivendell Minstrell instead. That way Bilbo is my defender and cancels all the nasty shadow effects. Obviously Arwen is mostly supplying Blibo with resources. The Orc Raiders is the card I am most afraid of, as they stole Bilbo's whole equipment in my last game during stage 2B. Fortunatly I still had Feint and Hail of Stones to reduce the umber of shadow cards in play.

@ Robert:

As you're using the leadership sphere in combination with a great threat maangement, are you already trying to use the Secrecy mechanic?

Ok, I built my first Secrecy deck, and what shall I say:

It works!

It rocks!

Wow!

Heroes: Théodred, Bilbo Baggins

In the first game I had the perfect starting hand: Faramir, Burning Brand, Fast Hitch, Protector of Lorien - everything you need in this scenario. Later I got Sneak/Gandalf etc I also got rid of the Goblin Gate with Out of the Wild. It was a blast!

The third game saw a good portion of bad luck. I got all three Timely Aids, used them all in round 2, but got only a single Dúnedain Wanderer (which I could have bought for 2 resources). I also got pretty much all Pathless Countrys early which made questing a hell. Fortunatly I had Faramir who led the fellowship towards Rivendell. At the end I got Pursued at Night and cancelled it with Test of Will. Then I entered stage 3B and got Orc Ambush which I cancelled with a second Test of Will only to get another Pursued by Night due to Orc Ambush's surge effect. I chose to hurt my allies as there were three Orc enemies in the staging area and almost every member of my fellowship was already exhausted. Fortunatly I got a location during the last turn.

Strategy:

Théodred and Arwen provide my fellowship with enough resources, the Secrecy mechanic gives me some good cheap cards. Key to winning is to survive the first couple of rounds and get Faramir and at least one threat lowering card out early. Timely Aid increases the chance to get the Gondorian ranger in time. My deck includes Song of Travel and Rivendell Minstrell to be able to play the spirit cards (again Timely Aid helps to get at least the Rivendell Minstrell).

I think you need to play Rivendell Minstrel from your hand for its effect to happen; not sure you can use his response from a Timely Aid.

Still, cool to see the Secrecy mechanic working. I tried it as well on another scenario with mitigated success.

Yes you cannot use ability of ministrel. You must play him from hand!!!

Anyway this quest is too easy to really pay big attention for. First time since KD and RHG i dissappointed.

Just checking how you're using this. Is the idea that you have UC so that she can quest and still cancel treacheries or so she can cancel treacheries and then defend against attacks? If so, great.

If you're cancelling a treachery, readying Eleanor, then revealing the replacement card from the encounter deck, I'm afraid it won't work. UC is an action and there is no action window in between cards being revealed during the quest phase, so you can only cancel one treachery per round.

(I get called out on stuff all the time. I'm not doing it to be mean, just to help you learn as others have helped me learn from making mistakes.)

Oh, thanks! Now I'm glad that she played her music somewhere else (never got her in my hand). Still a good ally!

@ Glaurung:

Yes, I'm also a bit disappointed about the quest, although think it is still a challenge. At least I seldom feel safe during this adventure, even when everything seems to work for me. The encounter deck has some nasty surprises to turn the tide in a single turn.

@ Chac:

Wow, and I thought making this quest in round 7 was good... Apparently Celebrían's Stone + Faramir is a great combo to hurry through the quest. Congrats!

No, I have not tried to play Secrecy yet. I want to give it a try, but I didn't use it in this games. Seeing that you have used it successfully, I will put this Secrecy cards in a deck, and see what happens.

Ooops, now that you point out this, I hadn't realize that fact, but I am sure that I havent got that circumstance in these games: I only cancelled one treachery in a row, and usually later used Eleanor to defend thanks to UC. I can digest most treacheries and reserve Eleanor only for the nastiest ones (sleeping sentry being one of them, of course).

And I thank you for clarifying this to me, don't worry. As said in other threads, it's easy to make a mistake and I for sure make severals. Now I have one less to commit. Nice to have you guys watchful, really happy.gif .

Greetings Budgernaut.

Great action on this on today everybody. I just purchased this scenario, so I'm looking forward to taking it for a spin myself real soon.

Just a quick question to clarify... all the scores still stand, right?

Want to make sure I'm tracking the discussion appropriately.

Thanks!

Yes juicebox, despite Budgernaut's clarification, I'm sure that my scores are ok, because I hadn't that situation in that 3 games. But if it is a problem, or you prefer it, I can repeat them anyhow.

Greetings.

A small imporvement is still an improvement:

Heroes: Théodred, Bilbo Baggins

What I didn't iclude strategywise is that the most important part is to get Burning Brand and Fast Hitch on Bilbo ASAP. That way I can pluck the eemies one by one, and once I have Mirkwood Runner I can eliminate them.

I was finally able to beat Chac's amazing result (but only because I got Sneak Attack in the last round of game 3).
