Story Card - Dexter Drake

By leoJ2, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

If you are lucky enough to get two tomes when drawing from the common items deck and the unique items deck during the set up, does this satisfy the "Pass" requirement on Drake's story, ie. draw two tomes to pass?

For personal stories, "draw" means "acquire after setup," so no such luck. If his pass condition was to say he needed to own two or more Tomes, then you'd be good. However, that's not the case.

Also, "draw" means "draw and keep" so a simple visit to the Curiositie Shoppe where you draw 3 Tomes while shopping won't do either. He'd need to buy one, and then get another one somehow.

Official Answers from Kevin Wilson (in the stickied threads above), Reply 18:

"Starting items never count towards personal stories unless they are of the type "have X items of a certain kind at once". And items must be drawn and kept before they count."

Tibs, I don't doubt you for a second, as in my short time here I have determined that you are somewhat of an authority around these parts. However, I do wonder from where you get your information. As we've discussed in another thread, the rules can be deceptively poorly-worded. Obviously, as in cases such as this, there is a "correct" answer. I had no idea that "draw" referred to post-setup.

I appreciate your skepticism. You're right—the conclusions I've stated are not obvious or apparent from a literal reading, and they're not clarified in the rules. They had to be clarified by the designer some time after the expansion was published. I was all prepared to tell you to check out the "Official Answers" thread but note that jgt's response has already linked you directly there. Well, not directly to that specific response, but it's in there somewhere.

I figured as much, but do all of your clarifications come from that?

I try my best to remember and regurgitate official clarifications, or to argue intent or logical conclusions where clarifications are lacking.

I really try my best to distinguish between official conclusions and speculations. I also try not to "spill the beans" on the FAQ, if ever I remember what it says.
