MIU Weapon Interface

By GreyHunter88, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

I still find the MIU Interface slightly confusing.

So, one can fire the MIU weapon as a free action, no matter what other actions they are undertaking. It says "one additional" weapon, implying that it can be fired in addition to any other weapons held. However, in the errata, it says that they are still limited to one attack action a turn.

How exactly does this work?

a) The character can fire a held weapon and the MIU, but they just have to take the same attack action with each

b) The MIU weapon can only be fired in addition to other weapons as part of a two-weapon attack, requiring the talents, that doesn't suffer off-hand penalties

c) The MIU weapon can be used by itself, if the character is running, working on a door etc., but you can only take one attack action per turn, so without using two-weapon fighting, it can't be fired as well as another gun.

We use the d) variant:

Make the normal attacks as RAW. And you get a free action to attack with the MIU. (just signle shot without any extras)

Correct option is c, by the errata.

Yes, C it is.
But it's cool enough that way.

Ever piloted a small craft with weapons that are MIU compatible?
Just use your action for piloting and attack for free.

I find the critical problem most people have with MIUs is it's never quite specified which weapons can be MIU'd, or what you can do with them. So I wrote this up!

Weapons equipped with MIU-links provide a large number of enhanced features to the wielder. First, the advanced machine spirit contained within is capable of relaying a great deal of data about the weapon, including ammunition, heat buildup, and material stresses, in addition to incorporating a small pict-camera. It allows an MIU-linked wielder to mentally switch between firing modes, eject clips, and fire the gun without pulling the trigger (This allows the trigger to be removed entirely, removing the ability for non-augmented users to equip it) while the camera allows for targeted shooting around corners, without exposing oneself to return fire. Good and Best versions of this upgrade do away with the need for a cable link, incorporating a small wireless vox-link. This allows the weapon to be fired remotely, or block firing by another user. Retrofitting this upgrade into a weapon takes up the under-barrel or scope mount on the weapon.

Thanks Errant, that indeed helps.

some additional questions:

- which weapons have a MIU? (given your description I'm inclined to say: all non-primitive, good weapons and the camera addition for best versions.)

- can the 'general 'MIU' also interface with hand weapons? like the 'Weapon MIU' can?

- if so, does the +10 BS for Good quality also give this +10 BS on that hand weapon, or only ship weapons??

- if so, can the +10 tech use be used to unjam weapons

In general I just treat it as an upgrade at the time of purchase if they request it with the necessary penalties, though I imagine almost all weapons used by forge-world skitarii would be MIU-linked by default. As far as I'm concerned, the ballistic MIU's major difference is that it incorporates the shoulder-mount, which allows the gun to be used entirely hands-free. I've never come up with any quality bonuses for those So yes, in my games a standard MIU is compatible with a weapon's MIU-link. The assorted bonuses should all apply to both firing and un-jamming the gun.

I use c. And the explorators PCs are generally assumed to be competent enough to upgrade a non-primitive weapon with MIU compatibility with some time and effort.

and thanks again. I've worked out what you said into more precise houserules and added a couple of things here

Any Imperial produced weapon/vehicle has an MIU interface slot in my game. And given enough time and the right resources, an Explorator can upgrade anything else.

And another burning question on this matter: the +10 BS food good miu'. Is that ship/vehicle only or also for hand weapons with which you can interface?

Says any MIU-linked item in the original description, I'd stick with that.

So hand weapons included... It makes them rather overpowered I would say, also from that I would gather if you take it so literally that if you interface with your autogun, that you get a +10 logic test as well. Which basic boils down to the fact that you get the +10 ALWAYS (when you carry a MIU Weapons) ? Since thats in the description/

Eh, I've been using these house-rules for a few months with no major hassles, but I have a tendency towards clever opponents. It's all well and good to be able to jack into your gun, but if it's been slagged by a haywire grenade it's little more than a heavy club until you can get it fixed.
