Brienne vs. The Maester's Path

By mathlete, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Brienne of Tarth (PotS) reads: "Lady. While Brienne of Tarth is participating in a challenge, opponents cannot trigger effects.".

If my opponent defends with Brienne and I win the challenge, can I still move a chain from the Maester's Path to a character?

No, you can't. To move the chain, you need to trigger the response on the Agenda, You can't trigger any response while Brienne is participating. She counts as participating until the end of the Framework Action Window in which the challenge resolves, so she's still participating when responses to someone winning/losing the challenge are triggered.

It is true that the FAQ says that effects on Agendas cannot be cancelled. But that is not what Brienne does - she cancels nothing, she prevents the opposing player from triggering effects. That's not the same thing.

Bottom line: You could not cancel the response on The Maester's Path (e.g. with He Calls It Thinking or similar effects), but Brienne prevents the response from being triggered in the first place.

It's the same with Siege of Winterfell, BTW.

Yup! I was sure this is how it should be ruled. Thanks!

This kina reminds me of an argument/discussion on the boards a while back about what wins vs. Cannot Be Killed and Cannot be Saved. The ultimate answer being that if you CBK, then there is nothing to save anyways. So as ratboy says, Brienne prevents the initiation, as opposed to allowing it to be initiated then cancelling it.

I could call you Krycek instead if you want (wonder if anyone gets that reference).
