Dust Versus WH40K/Space Hulk

By Armored Fist, in Dust Warfare

First of all, I'd like to say hello to fellow community members as the newest member to date. I have played WH40K, Warmachine, Hordes, and some Warhammer fantasy since I was 12+ and that was nearly 22 years ago so I have a strong backround in miniatures wargames.

I actually discovered this game by accident perusing my local, and really only decent model shop the Time Machine of Manchester, Connecticut and I found the game to look rather interesting at face value. The walker tanks, the power armored elites, the squads of soldiers and special weapons, the realistic approach to a largely japanese-style idea (mech warfare), and how close it resembles my pet favorite, Warmachine.

I am concerned about a few things however. The game's availability, pricing, and play style are still in question. I'm looking for relatively cheaper alternatives to WH40K and Warmachine/Hordes and I have yet to find a general price to compare since all the sources I've found are a mixed range of prices. In addition to mixed pricing, I've found few places at all to really get a compiled list of faction-sorted miniatures to look into purchasing. Most importantly however, Im concerned that the play style looks overly simple and not on an epic enough scale for my tastes. The Youtube video I viewed, link attached, described at the end the game CAN be played on a full scenic table top but it didnt go into details on how the templates would be amended for open direction game play such as Warhammer 40,000 and Warmachine. Also, are there plans on expanding the factions to include Asia, Russia, and some kind of Resistance force (French)? It would certainly be interesting for a rag tag group of basically mercenaries to include in your force (like Mercs in Warmachine).

I hope someone can sell me on the coolness of DUST because it looks amazing at face value.

Welcome to the forums dude. I myself am also new here and just like you I come from a Warhammer background. Unfortunately, I never had an opportunity to delve into Warmachine or Hordes although I do hear they are both great games. I found out about Dust tactics a while back and thought the universe itself was interesting and original, but it not being a full on table top game sort of turned me off to it. I like how the units look and I'll over the look the lack of individual model customization, over all very cool. Then I found out that the game will have separate rules for full on table top warfare. That caught my attention.

I've been out of warhammer for a good while and am hoping to find a new game that is just as fun and has in depth tactics as warhammer does. I'm also hoping that overall pricing is a little bit less heavy on my wallet. lol. Warhammer can be an expensive game. But just like you I am waiting patiently for a release date for Dust warfare. Hopefully in the next few months we will have a release date.

It's "on the boat" now, so it will likely be around a month or so when it is released.

Making a game that has more in depth tactics than 40k should hardly be a challenge .. time to check out some new tabletop systems eh? :)

yeah, i agree. Warhammer is fun and all but i'm ready for something new ya know.

I too come from a 40K (Rogue Trader actually) background and recently got into Dust. I can say comparatively that, at least for dust tactics, you're looking at about 50% the cost of a viable 40k army which is good since GW is insane with their prices right now. Miniatures are on par with their sculpts and this definitely has a good small unit feel to the game as opposed to GW's Apocalyptic size games they are pushing for. I would compare the Dust game (Tactics anyway) to around GW's "Combat Patrol" type of game and the previews for Dust Warfare look to be around what GW would consider 750 - 1250 pt games in terms of model count. Couple that with lower prices and it makes for a more affordable game to say the least.

Rules in Dust Tactics are very straight forward and you don't find yourself digging through rulebooks (or codexes for that matter) and the game plays very smooth. From the preview of Dust Warfare it looks as though the rules will be similar enough and that's VERY COOL. Finally the book is written by Andy Chambers and as a long time GW Player (and former store manager) that is EXTREMELY appealing to me as Andy is kind of THE forerunner in modern tabletop gaming seeing as he wrote the original WFB and 40K books.

Just my take on it and I would recommend at least looking into the game.

I agree with Wolfscout/ Dave. The game is WAYYY cheaper and easier to get started with. Also they will be coming out with more factions and models for existing factions in the near future as I know the next supplemental to the core system does included the Russian/ Asian army for the game.

Wolfscout I totally agree. I to came form the rouge trader era of warhammer 40k and over the the last 12+ years have been totally put off by the crazy rise in cost and really went looking other wise into war gaming not until i found this game has my mind been sparked with a creative spark I have not had since 1988 1990 when I first discovered table top war gaming. I am doing a lot of conversions. I hope to find some awesome people to share conversion ideas, touchdowns and failures with. GO FOR A BROKE!!!
