Some help please

By reptile74, in Rogue Trader

We're using a lot of house rules and skills are one of the main changes. Many of them has gone and some new has been created.

One of the new skills are "Hacking", breaking into cogitators or re-designing their "software" We really wanna use something more then Tech-Use in this case. But Hacking is sure not a Warhammeresque word so I need help with the name of this skill. Maybe we'll be using it as a trade skill (keeping it most simple)

What to call it? any cool and warhammer sounding ideas are welcome. Something like Cryptomancy or Cogitator Exorcism, well you know.... happy.gif

I know that there's a Murder Cogitator in one of the Dark Heresy Books which aggressively assaults the tech spirits of machines it's connected to.

I'd verbalise it as something vaugely heretical or blasphemous as relates the tech-spirit - data flensing, Tech subjugation/slavery, something like that. The Imperium tends to be very animistic as regards it's technology.

I would also presume that the Adeptus Mechanicus would probably not be happy with not-tech priests using (or having?) this skill.

Machine Animism? A skill relating to the soothing, converting and spiritual corruption of the Machine SPirit. Taught by Tech-priests and Hereteks alike. Most commonly used to create and destroy scrapcode, awaken a dormant machine and gain useful information threads from data looms.

Intrusion Methodology

Cryptomancy

Logoscoping ("seeing passwords")

I like Data Flensing and Cryptomancy.

My suggestions are Machine Intrusion for the act and Tech Usurper for the name of the criminal.

Thanks for the input. Haven't decided me yet,

As for the tools used...aka viruses/malware/trojans/worms etc...thats already been labelled as "Intrusion spirits"...As for the specific skill required to do it...perhaps...

Tech-override : simple and accurate..your overriding or overwriting the machine spirits defenses and programming with what you want...or more specifically you are hacking ( most often done by inserting a Intrusion spirit into the machine data port and giving it sufficient time to do its work to allow you more direct access. ) But also in this case represents your ability to create a suitable Intrusion spirit to handle the task at hand...these things take time and vary in complexity to create...perhaps a table as follows..

Easy( IE intrusion spirit capable of single action ONE time in a no-low security area such as a habstack or sink building...)This one time action can be to turn on/off lights or lock/unlock a single door or make an elevator change destination floor or stop etc..) = 1d5mins-INT bonus(min 1)

Routine( IE intrusion sprit designed to handle more complex SINGLE action ONE time in low security area such as at a normal public building or merchants shop etc ) This ONE time action can be anything as above plus can be used to turn on/off a machine remotely or lock/unlock a door/room for 1d10min+INT bonus)=1d10mins-INT bonus ( min 1)

Ordinary(IE intrusion spirit designed to a complex task ONE time for a prolonged period of time in a low security area) This can be as above OR ability to actively search through data looms/matrices etc for a single piece of information ( determined at time of creation ) and will remain active until the information is found at which time it will send the information to a predesignated location of creators chosing ASAP. = 1d5hrs-INT bonus (min 1 )

Challenging(IE intrusion spirit designed to carry out several complex tasks and attempt to hide its tracks from data defender spirits in a low to moderate security facility(such as local minor administratum facility or local arbites precinct ) This can be anything as above or as malicious as trying to reprogram attached machines or data looms to erase data or rewrite it as specified at creation..for example..erasing a arrest report and all subsequent paperwork pertaining to said individual(s) on specified date(s) ) = 1d10hrs-INT bonus ( min 1)

Difficult(IE intrusion spirit designed to carry out multiple complex tasks for a prolonged period of time and to hide its tracks from and actively defend against defender spirits in a moderate security facility ( such as city arbites HQ or administratum facility or large merchant facility ) This can be any of the above as well as ability to cause falsified orders to be transmitted and/or to prevent transmissions to other areas by the infected machine(s) within the complex ( this type is active until removed and can be used repeatedly in the same building until its found and removed / check for defenses success in removal each time the intrusion spirits set conditions or remote orders cause it to activate again ) = 1d5days-INT bonus ( min 1)

Hard(IE intrusion spirit designed for long term multiple complex tasks as well as a +10 bonus to hide its tracks from and actively attack defender spirits in a moderate to high level facility(such as district administratum or arbites HQ or noble house ) This can be any of the above as well as adding the ability to totally erase the target machine/data looms programming or reprogramming it to do anything within its capabilities...this ability extends to anything that is sharing a direct link with the infected machine ( whether its a building or a vehicle or even a SHIP )(such as rerouting power to alternative consoles or overriding safety protocols etc...) = 1d10days-INT ( min 1)

Very Hard(IE intrusion sporit designed for long term multiple complex tasks as well as a +10 bonus to hide its track from and +10 bonus to actively attack any defender spirits in a high level facility ( such as planetary governors bldg administratum HQ or PDF HQ) This can be any of the above = 1d5weeks-INT (min 1)

There are 3 difficulty levels higher with correspondingly better results and security access abilities...but to make full use of the skill you MUST have tech-use as well..this skill by itself is USELESS...common sense says if you dont know how to operate the thing you sure as hell cant hack it....

Also some tidbits to encourage more RP and diversity...IF you have the following as well

Common lore of the appropriate type for the machine to be hacked ( IE administratum/ecclesiarchy/arbites, etc...) then for each level of the lore you have you gain a +5 bonus to the creation of your intrustion spirit to use against them

Forbidden lore of the appropriate type as above example gives a +10 for each level to intrusion spirit creation.

Knowledge is power

Hope this helps.
