Jenkintown (Philadelphia), PA Regionals: June 9, 2012

By TheProfessor, in CoC Organized Play

There will be a Call of Cthulhu Regionals event at 7th Dimension Games (7thdimensiongames.com) on Saturday, June 9.

This thread is for any discussion, question, etc. associated with this event.

Looking forward to seeing many of you there!

Jenkintown is just north of Philadelphia. The Jenkintown train station serves several different SEPTA lines. We will be happy to provide transportation to and from the Jenkintown train station for out-of-towners needing such assistance, all you need to do is ask!

Chris

Looking forward to it!

CHANGE OF DATE:

The Regionals in PA will be on June 2nd. This way people can attend the MD event and the PA event as they will be on different days.

Sorry for the late notice, but we just found today. The FFG site has updated the date.

Still sounds good! :)

Hey Chris, do you know yet if any of the newer packs will be legal? Or will you be going with the list in the FAQ?

Just wondering. :) :)

My plan is to allow Written and Bound, as it has been out more than a month prior to the tournament. But Words of Power came out close to exactly 1 month before the tournament, so I'm thinking to prohibit it.

Sounds good to me, thanks Chris.

All players must provide a deck list describing the cards in their deck and the number of each card. Each Call of Cthulhu tournament deck may include only one Restricted card (up to 3 copies). The full list of Restricted cards is on the most recent FAQ (v 2.1) from Fantasy Flight Games. Feel free to contact the Tournament Organizer with any questions: [email protected]

Decks can be constructed using any of the cards released in the Living Card Game format, up to and including "Written and Bound." Cards from the Asylum Pack "Words of Power" will not be permitted in this Championship Tournament. Cards from the older collectible card game (black bordered cards) are permitted to be used if they have been reprinted in the Living Card Game format. The latest version of all cards, as indicated by FAQ 2.1 in the case of errata, will be used for all players.

The tournament will run Swiss Paired rounds, the number of rounds will depend on the number of participants in the tournament. If there are 16 or more participants, there will be a Top 4 playoff to determine the North East US Regional Champion.

Prizes will be awarded to players, and we have plenty of them! The trophy and certificate go to the winner, the Asylum Prize goes to the player with the lowest score. The other prizes will be distributed to players in order of finish.

* 1 Regional Champion 2012 trophy
* 1 Signed and certified Regional Champion 2012 certificate
* 2 Call of Cthulhu Regionals 2012 Magnifying glasses
* 2 Complete, uncut sheets from a recent Call of Cthulhu Asylum Pack
* 4 Full-color Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game playmats
* 8 Large glossy art prints
* 16 sets of 3 double-sided limited run Domain cards (48 cards total)
* 1 “Asylum prize” - Card box from a recent Game Night Kit for the last place player

SOOOOO…. what happens…. if… say….. I happened to arrive at this tournament of yours… and…. I had already won a regional championship this year? Is passing down some of the prizes a thing?

Though, I wouldn't worry about it to much. Odds of me making it are… well slim might be an overestimate :)

Well, I was thinking that only Eastern Pennsylvania residents could actually win… :-) No, just being sarcastic about the French thing.

I always run it that the winner can choose their prize. So if your situation occurred and you didn't want the trophy, say, you could pass on it and take some other prize.

You know, there is a train from P-burgh to Philly, and another train from Philly to Jenkintown that is very close to the game store… Or a road trip with a bunch of your western cronies…

Admittedly… I hadn't considered travel by train…. seems aweful, but possibly awesome.

Sadly its mostly going to be a scheduling conflict that will be keeping me at bay, but last minute plans may or may not be out of the question. I'm workin on it and hopefully I can make an appearence. :)

Looking forward to this event. Haven't played in a tournament since…..Star Wars CCG? Wow has been awhile.

Hey Chris, should we go by the newest post today regarding legal cards?

"The first two Asylum Packs from the Revelations cycle, Written and Bound and Words of Power, are now immediately legal for Call of Cthulhu tournament play."

Golly! I have advertised that we would be using Wrriten and Bound, but not Words of Power. That's here, and on the 7th Dimension Games website, and in the newsletter that 7th Dimension sent out… I'm thinking I should stick to that because people may have been play testing with that in mind, and only 4 days in advance to change the available card pool might not be cool…

Unless I get a compelling argument contrariwise, I'm going to stick with what I posted - no Words of Power for June 4th.

I hope you mean June 2nd! :)

That is probably the best thing to do, I agree. Just wanted to check! Cya Saturday!

Yes - June 2nd!!! This Saturday.

The Regionals are complete, Kellen is the victor. The turnout was low - only 5 participants - lots of competing, last minute things took away players. But the low turnout was compensated by the wonderful group of players creating a fun, competitive environment.

The deck lists are below - everyone was happy to share their ideas with the community. Kellen took to apologizing to his opponents in advance that his deck was not fun to play against, as it basically shut everyone down until their decks were gone. He never went to a single story (on offense or defense) throughout the entire tournament, and finished undefeated.

With Kopesh putting a damper on the meta-game against rush decks, a shut down, "mill" deck has a big advantage. yes, Forgotten Shuggoth could have wreaked havoc, but there were none to be found. I think a conversation about Kellen's deck and the implication on future tournaments needs to be discussed.

Final standings:

Kellen (kelMasterP) 3-0, Shub/Yog, Negotium

Joe (badash56) 2-1 Cthulhu/Shub, Khopesh

Chris (TheProfessor) 2-1, Agency, Descendant

Corey 1-2, Shub/Hastur, Guardian Pillar

Liz 1-2, Shub, Nyarlathotep

With no further ado, here are the deck lists:

OK, so after I posted the deck lists, I can't see anything on my web browser, so here is an alternate format of the same deck lists… hope this works!

So it just stalls the game with Glimpse of the Void and recurses Curse of the Stone and Ritual of Bellephar over and over?

Wow, that was weird…

Again,

So it just stalls the game with Glimpse of the Void and recurses

Curse of the Stone and Ritual of Bellephar over and over?

Yep. That's the basic idea. Ritual tended to be better because opponents figured out that characters in play were bad. Stone on the Peak keeps self from milling out. Burrowing Beneath is key to eliminate Snow Graves and such.

And, yes, since I pasted in the original deck lists this thread has gotten weird in format.
