Another Dusk Thread! [Sightseeing]

By Saldre, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hello All!

So, yes- I know what your thinking, "Another Dusk Thread!?" But this one is a bit different!

Most of them have focused on creepy events and encounters people can run into while walking and sleeping in the swamps or something like that- but what if they are just driving trough?

I am wondering if anyone has any inspiration for creepy things the players might encounter from the safety of a vehicle that may or may not tempt them to exit the car and investigate (which obviously, would be a horrendous idea!)

1- Things I can imagine would be catching glimpses of a crowd gathering in the mist at the end of their vision- if they focus, they can notice faces that look like people they've already killed or met- perhaps even loved ones.

2- Shadows from the trees slowly reaching out like claws or hands to wrap around the vehicle, they leave scratches on the sides of the car when the players investigate later (Or even better, players can hear the scratching...)

3- Generally speaking, my Dusk is populated by scaly hybrid monsters, with vaguely human features which (hopefully) add to their disturbing nature, and regular Swamp Predators (monstrous snakes and gators, with heavy focus on the former). As such, it would be rather disturbing to see massive things crawling or slithering in the distance, just out of sight. Added with loud splashes and a constant hissing in their ears.

4- The vehicle enters an area where all sound is muffled- no slithering, sliding, buzzing, splashing- absolutely nothing. Even the car's sounds are muffled, as if something was sucking it all out. Their breaths turn cold, just in time for the Driver to swerve in order to avoid a cluster of the now famous "Dusk Mist"- as they drive by past it, they notice faint light glowing within and massive, stilt-like spidery limbs scuttling away...

While it isn't necessarily a sightseeing idea how about this? The Player Characters end up either falling asleep or in a waking dream whereby their characters have just achieved their ultimate goal, such as attaining the rank of warmaster, only to then do something unspeakably evil and when they wake up all they remember is that particularly vivid dream and a voice in the back of their mind whispering "this could all be yours...". It would be rather appropriate since I believe that on Dusk the main form of divination is the interpretation of people's dreams.

Whether or not it was sent by Saynay, the Dusk Hag or some other daemonic entity would be up to you.

All I'm coming up with at the moment is that they spot an incongruous Imperial building in the swamp. This can be either a plantation house (a failed attempt at establishing an argi-colony; the house was once quite oppulent, but is now overcrown with creeper vines and moss as it is slowly reclaimed by the swamp- but there could still be valuables inside...) or a church (set up to try to convert the natives, but they refused to give up on the Old Ways and chased thepriest off into the swamp- where he now lives like a crazy hermit- and they are using the defiled church as a base for their unspeakable rituals...).

what about cities and towns on Dusk? are there any?

I assume there is 1!! But "city" is maybe the wrong term. think Town

and then there are villages

Hello again!

Yes, I can picture several hamlets and small villages a la Sleepy Hollow all over Dusk, something of them completely abandoned- with meals still on the tables, as if everyone had vanished moments before sitting down to eat.

There's one "City"- the space port, I believe other people have had that idea- and everywhere else is scattered. Some mechanicus fortresses and expeditions: they would have small, isolated fortresses.

Some nobles may have holdings- Frankenstein's Castle and Dracula's hill-top mansion would be two places you'd find on Dusk.

I can imagine seeing the outline of a massive castle in the distance then spotting the outline of some large, winged creature blot out the stars before vanishing into one of the towers.

Perhaps the players drive trough an abandoned such an abandoned hamlet- completely untouched save for a with a desecrated church in the center- like Adeptus Mentioned. On the other hand, that sounds more like a complete adventure then a "Sight" you'd simply spot and drive trough on the way to the real plot hehe..
